Hi,

This is my first thread on this forum, so please be gentle :)

I'm quite new in headphones and after couple tries I've settled to Beyerdynamic DT880 600 ohm - it's just perfect mix for me with SQ, comfort and price.
Now I'm looking for a decent amp to drive it. The only one I've tried so far was FiiO E9K and though SQ wasn't bad, I wasn't really impressed with it and it seems like it lacks a good bit of power.
The DAC is dedicated, also used for my full range stereo, so it is safe to assume "perfect dac".
I would prefer to stay in solid state camp, don't want to start into woods of tubes rolling.

So, anyone who also has DT880/600, what are you using and what you like or dislike about your amp(s)?

PS: I don't want to limit this thread to DT880/600 and amp only, but let's not morph it into too vague "best amp under $N"

Thanks you!

I have a DT880 250 ohm, and I love my O2 with it.

tubes are better for the 600 ohm beyers imo, they love OTL's

I've used beyers with SS amps

Hybrids also do fine.

What makes you to feel so? I would rather avoid the signature from tube.

How much power do you use at comfortable and enjoyable loudness?

25% or a 1/4th of the way.

Although tube based, I thought the Valhalla was a brilliant amp for the 880. You don't have to worry about rolling tubes with that one either. You don't have to roll tubes with any amp.

As it happens I own a DT880 600 ohm. I use the CEntrance DACport as a portable DAC+Amp combo and it drives it very well. You could take a look at Schiit Valhalla. You really don't need to roll tubes to get good sound out of it. On the other hand, you could also look for a CEntrance DACmini CX which has the same headphone amplifier as with the DACport only with a much better power supply. The DAC in the DACmini is much talked about for it's prowess. It is well beyond the $500 budget but look for one used or replace your existing DAC with the DACmini, if it's not a step back that is ! But I'm quite sure you'll be happy with the way it drives the DT880.

Hope this helps.

I don't think you can roll the Valhalla tubes, unless I'm mistaken - you are absolved of responsibility

.

Tube rolling is now possible with the Valhalla. Contact Jason of Schiit for more information.
