hmm sounds tempting except if i do get them recabled i wont have the turned into woodies becuase i dont want to spend that much.. that also begs the question does the sound improvement come from the recable or the woodie?

I purchased mine new from bhphotovideo so this agreement must not have been that exclusive.

I'm by no means at the audiophile level as most of the posters here, but my current setup is a pa2v2 with DT770/80, so I feel I'm somewhat qualified to answer here. I bought the phones new on ebay from guitarinsider ($200) and I feel that they are worth every penny. Again, here, its all dependent on what you use them for.
In terms of your mp3 bitrates, you will be surprised at what a good set of cans reveals. You will definitely notice a difference between your 128/196 kbps mp3s and 320 kbps, provided your source is decent (and it sounds like you are getting a decent sound card, so it should be). I wouldn't go so far to say that these mp3s will be BAD by any means, but the cans will bring out flaws in the music that you may have not noticed before, especially on speakers. I know a lot of my old, pre head-fi.com mp3s are of a low quality, and I went back and re-reripped them in 320kbps. Even this isn't the BEST solution, but it sounds fine with these cans.
I think that your music tastes will probably work well with these phones, at least if you prefer heavy bass. The PA2V2 will even intensify this bass, so if you want to tame the bass on these you might even want to look into a different amp, although for the price, the PA2V2 cannot be beat. If you want to tame the bass and highs, you could consider having them recabled at headphile, but recable +woody can easily run you $250 there.
I love these phones, but I understand that they aren't for everyone, or for every type of music. If you like a lot of classical, I'd say look elsewhere. But if you want a closed phone that can handle gaming, with or without an amp, and love bass, these are probably the phones for you.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I really hope my dad doesn't go all crazy and not let me get these with birthday money instead of a stereo/subwoofer.

It seems that my future setup will be a Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS Platinum > PA2v2 > DT-770

That sounds good. Am I right?

And seanohue, I'll let you know if the ebayer declines my offer. No offense, but if I can spend an extra 10 bucks of birthday money to get them new, I'd prefer that.

Depends on the encoder. ~192vbr is possibly the best option. 320 is overkill imo. But if knowing that you're listening 320kbps mp3s satifies you, go ahead...

What bands do you like?

Well, let me run this by my dad again.

After that, I plan to proceed and buy the Sound Blaster.

Then, my ATH-FC7's will go up in the for sale section.
Then, the money from the FC7's will go towards the PA2v2

And finally, the DT-770s.

Oooooooh, I'm so excited!

Just wanted to chime in to say that the PA2V2 is a great little amp to tag along with the 770s, I love the way the combo sounds and I personally don't think that the bass is overwhelming at all.... but hey, I love bass. <3 <3 <3

What does VBR do?

It automatically alters the bitrate to optimise it for the complexity or otherwise of the audio content. The upshot is often smaller files at higher bitrates.

You'd get better sound from a higher encoder rate, but you'll still enjoy the headphones.

As for the question about whether the re-cable or the woody makes the bigger difference, I cannot answer that, because I had both things done at once.

Well, now I'm upset.

It seems my parents (now both of them) are totally against the idea.....
My mom seems to think that in a few years, the technology will be outdated... That happens every few years, and that time span keeps getting smaller. Headphones would most likely last 5 times longer than a stereo! The sound would also be better.

They would prefer that I get the stereo with a subwoofer.

I guess I have to wait until I'm in/out of college to buy my own pair of expensive headphones.

Even though I would like that stereo, I really think the headphones would get as much, if not more usage. When I play through a stereo, I need to have the woofer pumped up.... I wouldn't be able to do that 90% of the time.

Maybe I'll bring those points up.

Am I right about what I've said?
