I'm not going to get them. Well, at least not any time soon. I think I'm getting a sound blaster 2zs and used XD400s. A total of $100 of my birthday money. The other $200 can go to something else. Maybe just put it all in savings accounts. They would be used for mainly gaming, so these should be great for that.

Do the DT-770's (80 ohm, guitar center version) absolutely need an amp? Would the be comparable to say an HD-555 as far as being easy to drive?

I'm not familiar with the 555, but the 770/80 can be driven from an iPod with reasonable results, although the bass is at it's best only when amped.

Having used both the DT770/80 and HD555 out of an iPod, I'd say no, the DT770/80s are not compareable to the HD555 as far as absolutely needing amping. The HD555s sound does not signifigantly change when amped, you basically get more of the same when you amp them. The DT770/80s sound changes a bit when you amp them, mainly, the bass gets a little stronger and the mids are a little more pronounced. You can totally get away without amping the HD555s whereas you really need to amp the DT770/80s to really show their potential.
