Drop + Dan Clark Audio AEON Open X - Impressions Thread

Is anyone using these with a dap? Not sure my Shanling M6 Pro has enough power to bring out the best in these.
Hard to say there was a thread with a reference to Dan saying they had been tested on some of the larger usb dac amps with good results like the btr5. Lots of other threads saying they need proper voltage.

I'm with Dan, I also enjoyed using this headphone with an Earmen TR-Amp, good power and good match in terms of synergy

Works fine with a balanced connection with my HiBy R5 Saber. And I'm even boosting the bass a little.
I have the original Cirrus Logic R5, and it's just enough to power the 58X, and falls a little short with the Quad Era-1. I find it a little hard to believe that it will unlock the true potential of these headphones. I don't want them to sound thin. I think I'm going to pass on these until I get a proper amp. Some people say yes, but the majority say probably not.

You aren't comparing like headphones. These are 12.5 ohms. The R5 Saber can put out 1040mW per channel into 16Ω using the balanced output.

This headphone power calculator is useful for determining how much power you might need

Yeah I wish I had an apples to apples comparison. I have tried them on low quality on board power like latest Intel chipsets. And it wasn't horrible. Was different but not bad.

They're impedance is also 92db, which requires quite a bit more voltage than that of the 2 headphones I mentioned. Have you used your Aeon X with any more powerful amps? If so, did you notice a difference in performance?

I am aware of what its needs are. And that's not accurate. It actually doesn't need a lot of voltage. It needs current.

Use the headphone power calculator. We can't really talk about this while you are still guessing (incorrectly) what the needs of the headphone are.

And yes. I currently own 3 planar magnetic headphones and have previously owned 4 others. I'm quite experienced at driving them with a variety of amps.

Hello,

A question for all the owners of the Aeon X Open.

Since these were essentially re-tuned version of the flow series. Did Dan ever kept the flow serial number?

I'm buying a pair locally and I'm not sure if these are the Drop version.

I'm pretty sure this is the regular Aeon Flow open but the only thing I'm unsure about is the AOX001 and AOXC368. Because these were early batches (2020) I'm not sure if New serial and classification were used yet.

Are these the Aeon X Open from Drop or are they just the Flow?

Thank you!

Well I just tested with a Qudelix 5K plugged into the laptop compared to my Schiit Asgard 3 with unison usb dac. So $450 vs $115. Clearly noisier on the 5K volume was similar. I feel like the was a some drop in low end but it is hard to say the chain is so different. Certainly the Asgard is way cleaner plugged in.

The Qudelix 5K does not have as much power as the Hiby R5 Saber we were discussing.
