Does Caffeine improve focus/logical thinking?

Mar 23, 2010 at 11:51 PM Post #16 of 48
Do not eat a carb breakfast before the test, or sugary drinks.
Have eggs, sausage, bacon, ........a protein breakfast.

Carbs, although your brain runs on them, will make you cloudy before a test and raise melatonin levels that will make you tired.

Also get enough sleep. Dont use caffeine to make up for sleep. Staying up extra late to study and trading study time for sleep doesnt work at all. You either know the information, or you dont.

......lmao .... sorry mate but I dont think you should be hanging out in the forums until you're done with your exams. No need to fail another year's worth of work.

I recommend, very strongly, you investigate detoxing your body, instead of adding more crap to it. It's a lot of effort and can be unpleasant to do somewhat (so is best done during, say, the Summer break), but if you can take it as far as changing to a vegetarian raw food diet, along with breathing exercises, you'll never need coffee again, as your thinking will be sharp and clear, your stress lower, your sleep better and a whole host of other things.

thanks for the concern...

but have been studying since yesterday.....and almost done ..just revising to ensure precise details.

i cant sleep cause i am stressed..and hence studying...so if i cant sleep..atleast i should take caffeine when i am up to prevent messing up exam due to other reasons such as fatigue.

No it will do the absolute opposite and cause your mind to wonder, pop pills like a normal kid.

Always get plenty of sleep the night before a test. Much better than caffeine.
Even better: plenty of sleep+cup of coffee the morning of the test
Sleep deprivation will impair your concentration.

Caffeine will take away from your sleep though. Especially, the quality of your sleep.
Don't think you are detoxed of it just from not drinking any coffee from 1 morning till the next. Especially with some caffeinated soft-drinks later in the day.
Again, it can accumulate enough to influence your sleep.
Now what is a silly solution for a lack of sleep feeling? better not be more caffeine!

I don't believe in the whole detoxing your body thing with organics, etc. But it is a reality that you should avoid caffeine specifically and have little of it running your body. Drink it as a tool for when you need it; not as a routine drink throughout your days.

I also agree with Drag0n's protein breakfast suggestion. You'd be suprised how much more energy you'll have for the day. If you want a simple breakfast for the morning. Drink some milk. Have some leftover rice and crack an egg on top. And pocket a fruit to eat a little later.

well unless ur like me and pretty much immune to caffeine :P

however by you asking it probably is not a good idea to drink too much of it since you don't seem to drink it as much as i do. sleep is always good esp the day before an exam and drink some coffee in the morning if you really need it.

I have to agree with some of the other posters here that one should never pull an all-nighter. Nevertheless, this is something that is easier said than done and demands discipline and dedication. Nocturnal, I recommend you visit http://www.calnewport.com/blog/. Cal Newport's techniques are some of the best I've seen period.

Healthy sleep is key. I remember my drinking days and how bad I felt the next morning. I don't drink anymore, but suffer insomnia. Lack of sleep to me is like the hang over without the booze. I'm irritable, weak, and just plain miserable. I've found that coffee will increase my irritability too. None of which are good things when trying to take an exam. I feel for you. Good luck! I hope you do well.

My experience is that it does.
It will hurt your sleep as well though, so you weigh up what is most important
