omg! i was just going to post my technics s-lp550! it is still surprisingly good. i don't remember how old the sony scd-1 is but perhaps that is the best cd player that many people could afford. this is like an old Toshiba Betamax. it means business. at least cd's are not quite obsolete yet.
oh, wait that is not completely true. many new dacs sound best in "nos" mode. in fact these old players many times do 16/44.1 better. however the mentioned technics really makes a nice transport today. comparable to what you would pay $2,000 new. it was like $600 in 1988. in fact dare i say it was not until like 5 years ago a crt display was still king.

Thats good to know. I'm going to be trying it out as normal first and then trying it as a transport. I think it was one of the first to use two 18 bit Dacs. I have no idea what decoder it is though.

Here is my office system. A Kodak 5-disc carousel CD player I won in a raffle in 1992. It's a Kodak PCD-5870. It features "1-Bit Technology" and plays Audio and Photo CD's.
Mint condition including instructions and remote. Sounds good up to now. Nice and smooth- very deep bass with the HD800. Maybe a little warmer than neutral. Needs warming up though.

Had the 550 running for a few hours now and the sound is lovely. Really coming alive. Very smooth and dynamic. My more modern Marantz 5001 in comparison, sounds hard and a little cold. I don't think I'm even going to try the Technics as a transport as I'm more than happy with the old 18 bits.
I can officially confirm that vintage decks still cut the mustard!!

Need to give it a good clean and new CDM4 gear but other than that, in good audible condition. May swap out the op-amps at some point, and re-cap it all with nichicon if i feel brave.
I have a badass Beogram CD50 from 1984, as part of a Beosystem 5000. It's really cool, but the motorized tray failed a couple years back and it can only be fixed by ordering some parts from a guy in the Netherlands and doing it yourself.....I may get around to it one day, but it's hardly seemed worth the trouble at this point.
