My player for CDs. A 1997 Rega Planet. I don't know, I still like sound of it.

Great photos Redcarmoose, Those Rega toploaders still go for a pretty penny. The original looks fit in well with your set up.

I paid $400 six years ago. If I purchased now it would be a used Rega Saturn. They are in the used market about $500.

My parents still have a Rega Luna amp, same design as the Planet CD player, love that amp.

Yeah I still remember when a cd player, ANY cd player, would cost you close to $1000. But I still remember being in absolute AWE the first time I went into my favorite audio store and heard a cd for the first time. Now I'm not happy unless it is an SACD....(sigh)

Toshiba XR-35A

I know I'm going to anger a few people saying this, but put it on a sturdy surface and it will embarrass many a modern DAC. If you can get past the 'early digital icy' sound it's just breathtaking what some of these early players are capable of. This one can truly put you there with the band.

Nice to see this older gear.  :)

I used to have a JVC XL-Z1050TN.  $750 or so back in the mid 90s.  Got a good review in Stereophile or The Absolute Sound.  I was going to use it in my little headphones-only system, but when I checked with my dad (who had it in his basement) it didn't work anymore.

From what I see and read, Rega is still making some of the best audio equipment out there, cd player included.

I guess it comes down to weather you like the house digital sound? Maybe not super clear, but nice.

Here's my Nakamichi CDP-2A and TA-2A amp. Manufactured in 1988, good old vintage stuff. Sounds great too!
