I have never tried any high end amps, but I find my Ibasso t3d to be perfectly suitable for portable on the go use

I'm a total noob like you who just, at the beginning of this month got my feet through the door and into the world of better listening. I picked up some HD 595's cause they were in my price range and on sale for $117. I did some research and pretty much asked the same questions you did and ended up getting a Fiio E7 and L3 cause again it was in my price range and fits my lifestyle. Long story short, although I'm a total noob at this, it is a noticeably nice difference from the HD 201's that I upgraded from. In the end I only spent around $220, not too bad for a beginner who doesn't have the trained ears that experienced listeners do.
