DIY Cable Questions and Comments Thread

I'm beginning to dip my toe into the waters of DIY cables for the first time and have a question for any cable builders out there willing to offer their advice. As someone who uses portable equipment exclusively, I'm preparing to construct a 4.4mm balanced IEM cable.

My question is twofold - would there be any potential sonic benefit to adding an additional copper sleeving layer to my IEM cable, and secondly if I grounded the sleeving to the 4.4mm plug's ground, could the other end be grounded to the Y-split somehow? Very curious to know if any of you have attempted this.

Headphone and IEM cables do not need to be shielded.

Anyone aware of a clear heatshrink that when shrunk remains softish/moveable?

All the clear I've tried (no glue) shrinks then sort of sets quite hard.

Want to make some premium earhooks for IEM cables.

After a lot of procrastination, I sat down today to try and solder together a DIY cable I made a few years ago with new terminations for my HiFiMan headphones and 4.4 TRRS.

I haven't got the eyesight, equipment, or patience for this anymore. Is there anybody in this thread who will solder this thing together for me? Anybody who's up for it, PM me your rates and I will send you the cable.

did someone tried here to make cables from the ground up?
i mean from the ground up like this:

also this is a related great video imo... you can actually hear how silver sounds very different then the rest

soo this video made me wanna go with silver

how about a twisted pair of this:
https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/silv...-pure-silver-wire-9999-fep-o13mm-p-17791.html

a sleeve of cotton around the twisted pair:
https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/cott...ural-cotton-for-cable-o-15mm-ecru-p-3147.html

2 sleeves of copper braid for 100% shielding:
https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/gain...shielding-sheath-100-copper-1-4mm-p-3347.html

another sleeve of cotton and then a sleeve of nylon for protection

a 1m pair of pure silver chinch or xlr cable would cost around 100€ without plugs

a cheap pair of plugs would be these tellerium copper silver plated ones
https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/rca-...-copper-silver-plated-o85mm-pair-p-10555.html
40€ for 2 pairs

What you think of the idea? what worries me the most is getting the twist right, specially for XLR cables but pricewise it looks really great
i think ready made pure silver cables cost upwards of 100-200€ per meter

beside the idea above i wanted to ask if anyone made expierences with coaxial spdif cables... the most promising solution on the cheaper side i found was this supra trico:
https://www.ebay.at/itm/221531066378

these plugs (from above) also seem to be a great fit for the cable:
https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/rca-...-copper-silver-plated-o85mm-pair-p-10555.html

i read now multiple times that its better to use longer spdif cables (because of electric reflections inside the cable)
so, should i go for 2meter instead of 1meter?

Does anybody know where I can find purchase purple unsleeved cable similar to the CB-16 from iBasso or the Fehu from vikingweaves?

Hey,

for the last few coax cables i used mogami. As for the plugs, i used either furutech or KLEI Bullets. But you could also start with REAN, if you haven´t soldered before. Same for XLR cables, braided litz wire or something like mogami, viablue, cordial aso. with Neutrik plugs. A good solder joint is the most important thing imo, also tinned litz joint as short as possible.

Haven´t got and read about issues with short length!? Do you have a link pls? Couldn´t say something about your listed items above.

anyone know of a decent quality 3.5mm connector that is large enough to accommodate 8 wires? I’m looking to re-terminate a 8 wire 4 pin XLR to a 3.5mm. Seems like it’s gonna be tuff if it’s even possible at all. Pic below for reference.
