The D5K and D7K sound pretty similar to my untrained ears. The D7000 is slightly more refined for lack of a better word but there's not a lot in it. I was expecting the D5K to be noticeably bassier than the D7K, but it isn't. I'm sure HiFiGuy can give a better comparison.

I would like to own the D2000 to get the full set, but I'm not sure I could justify having 3 headphones that are almost the same.

And... if you'll apply the "Markl Mods" to the 5000's... I suspect you'll prefer them for the money.   A well matched amp, will also make a big improvement (low impedence, high current output - like the X-CAN v8, which is superb with them).

In terms of sound, there is not much point in getting the D2000 if you already have the D5000 or D7000.

the d2000 is nothing like the d7000, the d7000 has a smoother presentation, better highs, cleaner more textured bass, and a more resolving midrange. also, the highs/mids/lows blend together quite well while the d2000 sounds kinda separated and isn't as musical. the d2000 has more bass than the d7000, but its also more hollow and cheap sounding. its a fun headphone still, and a huge bang for the buck at its price, but doesn't come anywhere close to being as good as a d7k

Follow-up vid/thread is here in case any of you missed it.

Edit: for link

Thanks for linking the video.  The D7000 is truly Hi-Fi while the D5000 falls a bit short.

Loving my 5000's when you turn them up the bass literally makes them vibrate on your head. Can't say much about the 7000's but if its anything like what I'm experiencing now then

there is a bigger difference whne you go backl from the D7k to the D2k then when going from the d2k to the d7k.
IMO anyway.

I currently own a pair of D5000's and love them. I really wonder if I should look up for a D7000 considering the price difference. Age old question is it really worth it? :)
This thread has been really useful, thank you. Still haven't decided though.

EDIT: And now there's the HP700...

if you want tighter bass, and a small step up in clarity, then yes

But I have the impression that this package comes at a cost of slightly recessed mids.

If you trust the FR graphs, then yes, you are right.  D7k and D5k both have very similar somewhat v-shaped curves, but obviously D7k will be much cleaner in execution.  D5k is effectively flat in the curve, if a bit less ultimately refined in detail than D7k.  D2k and D7k seem to be two different levels of sound quality of the same type of sound signature, while D5k seems to be the only of the trio with a different signature all together as far as the mids level.   That is, at least, according to the measured graphs.

Its true the D7k mids are slightly recessed in comparison to the D2k, and IMO I prefer the more forward mids, mmm maybe time to get that LA mod, will haveto do reading first.

But I have a feeling I will get used to the slightly recessed mids, the clarity and the sound in general is why you get the D7k, you get it because its the best can to sit back, close your eyes and listen to the music while you smile like an idiot who just got lucky for the first time.
