I consider laying waste to entire civilized continents worthwhile if I can get Roadie to laugh.

I noticed the volume change too and thought it was three that was louder until I skipped ahead to check. Yeah, like I said the song is over already when the glitch happens, so no big deal.

SoD - Angels of Distress is one of the greatest dark metal albums for me. The sad, depressing and haunting atmosphere on this album is something really unique. I especially love the title track and beginning of quiet these paintings are, which sounds like dark metal version of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

I can't believe how it took me so long to get "The Gathering - How To Measure A Planet?". I once saw a negative review on some metalmagazine years ago, which claimed that the album was too prog, boring and had nothing interesting whatsoever. So, I have had every other Anneke-era release from The Gathering, but passed on that album. Well, finally got it, and I was stunned. Double cd, full of by far The Gathering's best prog-era material, and the last track is a 30 minute instrumental. I instantly fell in love with this album. Fans of progressive metal _have_ to check this out. Others may agree with the metalmagazine's opinion, heh. Definetly "Nacherish" stuff, not "DarkAngelish".

Yes you are correct, too prog for me ..............but I do like early Gathering:
-Night Time Birds
-Mandylion

Yes Mandylion and Nighttime Birds are both good, especially Mandylion. They are both quite metal, but still keep the slight progressive edge. Does anyone have experience with pre-Mandylion albums? I'm under the impression that they are some kind of B&B?

On completely another topic, what opinions do people in here have about Orchid vs Morningrise? No matter how much I listen to those, I always seem to consider Orchid clearly better. Morninrise just seems somehow dull and boring in comparision, though I do like Black Rose Immortal and To Bid You Farewell. The first three tracks just seem to be lacking something, while every track on Orchid seems to be great.

Wooooo!!! I just got done listening to Vigin Black's albums. Great stuff. Sombre Romantic is much darker, IMO. I feel like I am in the middle of a gothic church with this band. Love it!! I am a little more familiar with Sombre Romatic, because this is my second run thorugh, but I think I like it more than Elegant...and Dying at the moment. I will have to listen to the latter again to really tell. I like the darker sound of Somber Romantic more. I wish it was longer like Elegant...and Dying. Also, the singer is out of this world. He is like a gothic Andrea Bocelli!

What is really good about Virgin Black is that their albums are really well recorded with great dynamics and outstanding bass. Really, my pictures were rattling on some of the songs. I cannot wait to hear the next album. It has a whole orchestra in it. That should be something

PS. You guys are evil for exposing me to all of this stuff. It's audio crack, I tell you!!!

I really like Virgin Black also.......much more than Elend which is also one of Nacher's favs, but they are a bit too abstract/avant for my taste.

Here is a band for those who like Virgin Black.........Haggard

This is debut " And Thou Shalt Trust The Seer" and they have 3-4 albums total all worth getting. Check these samples out:

From the Dimmu Borgir web site.

Short news bulletin from the Dimmu camp, Silenoz told me that "Stormblåst 2005" have street date November 7, 2005, the new CD vil contain ****load of extras for the price of a regular CD. They are also planning to record a video from the Stormblåst 2005 release toghether with Patrick Ullaeus and Revolver Film Comp.

I actually heard a bit of the 2005 remake (someone leaked a copy that has all the songs, but they all fade out halfway through). Sounded Ok, but still like DCA best

Anything by Shagrath must be mine.............of course I have original Stormblast album but will pick up new version for remaster and bonus tracks. I suspect it will include the Devil's Path EP tracks and perhaps a live track or two

This question comes up often, what other dark metal groups have similar sound to the progressive death/black style of Opeth, these are similar:

Katatonia - Brave Murder Day (Akerfeldt vocals) + Brave Yesterdays (collection)
*
Edge of Sanity - Crimson I, II + Purgatory Afterglow + Spectral Sorrows (Dan Swano project)
*
Agolloch - Pale Folklore
*
Novembre - Classica + Novembrine Waltz

Also saw newest issue of Metal Maniacs magazine at store with Opeth on cover and long write up in center, also big spread on Arch Enemy.
