I did purchase Midnattsol CD, samples sound good but no Tristania.

I see where Tristania has repackaged 2 EPs + 45 minute DVD of Widow Weeds tour concert together, The End has it but DVD is PAL format and my DVD players are all region 1, love to have seen Vibeke in action......

i wouldnt expect Midnattsol to sound like Tristania, they are Folk Metal afterall ... and no male vocalist AFAIK ?

thanks for the heads up on that repackage. Currently im waiting for Theatres des Vampires - Pleasure and Pain

also next week I will be getting

Theatre of Tragedy - The Velvet Darkness They Fear
Within Temptation - Enter
and probably that Midnattsol CD

Okay, that one got me out of lurking mode.
Why? That aside Duffy's voice is something else, n'cect pas?
I remember when Mythic's album first was released and hearing the vocals and seeing the picture, which caused a bit of "cognitive dissonance."

Didn't realize Dana Duffey was formerly of Mythic, if you are fan better grab this limited Demonic Christ reissue from blackmetal.com with bonus tracks and expanded booklet.......they also just released CD with several EP demos collected together called "demonic battle metal"

CD credits Dana as performing lead guitar and vocals, so very rare indeed to have one person performing female death vocals and lead guitar. There are some photos at thier website from mid 1990's doing live show, looks like Dana was using Jackson guitar back then......

Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies
Nacher was correct this is a huge leap forward regarding sound quality. A step backwards hardly being possible.

The music is wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. I'm on track 8 of my first listen. The vocals, well I hate them. They bore me (as do the 3 Tenors). Maybe that will change with time.
I still prefer the Sham Mirrors though for amongst other things it's very wild mood swings, which set it apart. Sideshow certainly has the competence, consistency and cohesion but lacks the wonderful eccentricity and unpredictability of Sham.

Midnattsol
Really like this debut album, much better than sisters work in Leaves Eyes, similar to Nightwish and as good as thier best work........Enverxis you really need this!

Arcturus - Slideshow Symphonies
This is pretty good but starting to go in the wrong direction for me. I can dig progressive/avant dark metal but if it starts to become too soft and mellow my interest starts to fade. Probably will be big hit with fans of Tool/Perfect Circle or newest Opeth album.......this will sound great for you.

I finally went out and bought Virgin Black - Sombre Romantic. Yes I had liked Elegant and Dying quite a lot, but their debut is even better. It's only about 45 mins compared to almost 80 minute lenght of the Elegant and Dying, but OMG. I'm amazed, especially the first three tracks are one of the classical/dark metal hybrid tracks I have ever heard. Just so damn evil and emotional. Can't wait for VB's upcoming third album.

Not really. Some female vocals, but mostly operatic male vocals. The lead guitarist is female however. And no, those are not your usual powermetal vocals, but something really unique. Really melancholic sound. It's hard to compare Virgin Black to anything. Some samples were at their offical website.

I've played it twice daily and do like it very much (for what it is). I've gotten used to the Euro-trash vocals, they don't bother me too much anymore. I don't hear any TOOL here but that is mostly because I know them on a more intimate level than one who's not a big fan would not. (Nothing wrong with not liking TOOL or not being too interested IMO. Just to be clear.

). Sideshow Symphonies is very European, frivolous, fun, playful, inventive. TOOL is very American, primal, serious, single minded, psychically intense/uneasy (not that those latter attributes are American. They're separate things. Just to be clear!

).

On a technical note does anyone elses copy have a glitch/snap at 8:25 of track 2? Music is over by then so I won't bother returning. Just curious.

I don't know, something just really clicks with me with these vocals. To me, they are outstanding. Kinda half opera and half power metal. I LOVE this album. The previous two, I dunno though. I like the vocals better on this album than from what I have heard on them. Also, Arcturus sounds NOTHING like Tool to me. I get a Les Miserables meets metal feeling from Sideshow Symphonies, and a... well... Tool feeling from Tool. I really wish there was more music that sounds like Sideshow Symphonies in the world. Outstanding album

All the copies of SS seem to have snap at the end of track 2. Also, the track 2 is mastered to a lower volume level than the others. A strange glitch indeed. Who cares though, as the album rocks. Virgin Black actually is a bit like "darker" Arcturus. Operatic vocals, but compared to Arcturus, the overall sound is a lot more serious, simplier, dark, melancholic and so on.
