I like the earlier metal stuff.
But I love The Sham Mirrors. What a viciously badly mastered CD though, a real shame.

I wouldn't call Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies leaked, as I bought my retail copy today. And yes, I'm a Arcturus fan. Sham Mirrors was nice, but atrociously badly mastered. La Masquerade Infernale, however, is the greatest work of avantgarde/weird/obscure dark metal ever done. I'll post more impressions after more in depth listening to this.

Edit : First impressions from 2-3 first tracks are "Covenant - Nexus Polaris with clean vocals". Also, this one is mastered very well. I was very pleasantly surprised with the sound quailty. It even sounds like this album isn't mixed to the max volume. Now this is really rare!

a couple b&b things you might try (both of which I believe I found out about on earlier incarnations of this thread =])

Draconian - a bit slower in pace & more oppressive in feel, sound kinda like My Dying Bride with b&b vocals. also less polished than the others you mentioned, but I like 'em anyway.

Trail of Tears - earlier albums seemed kind of like mediocre also rans to me compared to Tristania etc.. but for some reason I think New Dimension of Might is really great, definitely worth a try, if you like it you can give the earlier ones a listen but I don't like them as much.

I'm not as well versed as most of the folks posting on here and I don't have some of the descriptive vocabulary so hopefully you'll get some other reccomendations too =]

Few more:
Sirenia - two albums, Morten Veland of Tristania own band
Penumbra - Last Bewitchment
Darzamat - first two only: Flames of Black Art + Opium of Black Veil
Trail of Tears - all albums (4)

Have you seen this website for female dark divas?
Sonic Cathedral

Still too early to say anything final about Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies, but I would say it's not quite as obscure and odd as I wished it to be, but it is good and does sound like Arcturus. Also, the vocals are just as good as Garm's, or even better. Definetly needs more listening.

I saw Callisto live yesterday, and as always, they were good and always play a lot of unheard, new material. This time there were some _really_ good new tracks and as the band has amazing ability to maintain their multi-layered Pink Floydish doomcore sound in live situations, they really would deserve to gain some more name.

Despite his comments, Veland sounded much better in Tristania and nothing Sirenia has done comes close......unfortunately.

Also lets add a couple more to list:

Odes of Ecstasy - Embossed Dream + Deceitful Memory
Dargaard - all albums (4)

Opeth gig only a few days away, and I still can't stop listening to Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies. Totally hooked to this. Just gets better and better. Anyone else been listening to this?

I will pick it up along with new Old Man's Child as soon as available in USA.

Enverxis
I think I will pick up: Midnattsol

I can't post much more since my major buying days after a few years are now over.......I have most of the dark essentials now hundreds of CDs later, we need "new blood" to keep thread going and begin the journey of dark discovery........

NP: Watain - Rabid Death Curse + Casus Luciferi

Yes Watain have learned well from the ancient masters, destroying all the pathetic Burzum clones that pretend to be pure nekro kvlt.......

I really like "Kenose" CD also, expanding the boundries of dark metal. Also have the "Si Monvmentvm" CD by Deathspell Omega.
If you don't have all recent Massemord & Sykdom CDs buy them, true grim norse that also crush the legions of sorry Burzum clones.
