Darkest Desires PART THREE

Apr 25, 2004 at 10:38 AM Post #632 of 671
Someone might get some new ideas from my new top 20 dark metal list, which is a "what I have been listening most during the past weeks" instead of all time top, heh.

1. Swallow The Sun - The Morning Never Came (doomy death metal)
2. Reverend Bizarre - Harbinger of Metal & In The Rectory of Bizarre Reverend (doom metal)
3. Elend - Winds Devouring Men (Dark Orchestra. Not metal, but still belongs into this list)
4. Ensiferum - Iron (Folk Metal)
5. Finntroll - Nattfödd (Troll Metal)
6. Tenhi - Kauan & Väre (Progressive Neo-Folk (?). Not metal either, but belongs in here)
7. Sepultura - Roots (Re-entry

)
8. Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines (Extreme oriental death/trash metal)
9. Mar De Grises - The Tatterdemalion Express (Melodic doom metal)
10. Rapture - Songs For The Withering (Melancholic metal, like older Katatonia)
11. Melechesh - Sphynx (Oriental black/trash metal)
12. Anathema - Judgement (Possibly EMO metal?)
13. Amorphis - Far From The Sun (Prog rock/metal)
14. Forgotten Tomb - Springtime Depression (Burzum clone)
15. Throes of Dawn - Binding of The Spirit (Dark metal)
16. Therion - Secret of The Runes (Metal opera?)
17. Charon - The Dying Daylights (Melodic rock/gothmetal)
18. Dark Suns - Swanlike (Progressive metal)
19. Shape of Despair - Angels of Distress (Funeral doom metal)
20. Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale & Disguised Masters (Avantgarde metal)
h
DarkAngel : I might have been too harsh with my criticism of IF - Soundtrack To Your Escape. It's not that bad after all, but still sounds a bit too much like Korn for me. I agree that it is somewhat better than RtR.

Also, watch out for the upcoming album from Throes of Dawn. The samples and new material on live gigs have sounded very promising.

I had been searching for that 6 months ago based on hearing some samples at the Dark Sun's older website. I just did a search and see the site has been updated with the same four mp3 samples.
Mildly Katatonia-Opeth-esque, more of a pleasing & relaxing sound rather than exciting. I've ordered it for the relaxation (and partially out of stubbornness because I wanted it before).

KR, I'm quite sure you would like Swallow the Sun as well.

edit : And Reverend Bizarre as well. It's very, VERY good oldschool doom metal. Just have to love that 5 minute long drum solo, heh.

I went to their web site and listened to the samples of their upcoming album, sounds really really good, may need to pick that up.

KR: "Shape of Despair - happy Funeral Doom Metal
Skepticism - happy Funeral Doom Metal
Sunn O))) - Drone Doom Metal"

that's all you need there. i worship skepticism. there are only a handful of funeral doom band in this world.

shape of despair is god also. isnt really funeral to me though. play pretty fast actaully, but then again nothing is slow enough for me. though i still prefer shades off... over angel of distress. i'm very looking forward to their new album.

nacher:

"Tenhi - Kauan & Väre"
those should be in the top of your list. love that stuff.

"anathema - judgement".
just emotional rock would do. never really liked this album. i feel the songs doesnt fit into one story/theme, seem to be scattered all around. 'aternative 4' neither, it sound way too much like the new katatonia stuff, the lyrics are overly implified i think. i love 'eternity', 'a fine day to exit' (gave 2 copies away as gift), and most songs from a 'natural disaster' is good too. seem like i like their more pink floydish side.

"Reverend Bizarre"
i cant believe i still havent listen to this band.
-
anyone into some very creative and wierd sounding semi-doom metal should check out the band unholy (not the new popular, the disbanded one). too bad they dont the fan base they deserved.
-
'Top 50 Melodic Dark Metal 3/2004'
what a sad list.
-

also the end records still haven't ship my cds. it've been 16days, those lazy bums.

Check out Thergothon, if you want slow and darkness. They broke up ages ago but you can still get their albums. I have Stream from the Heavens.

yeah i listen to them too. good happy furneral doom. they have very unique liquidy vocal and this almost scifi keyboard that isnt cheesy like those other doom band. i have to admit, if you ever read their interview, the vocalist is kinda of a dick at times (he talks a lot about his penis and naked, bleeding girls lying on concrete). do you have the original copy or the reissue? i almost bought the original one from this guy for $25....should have.

oh, i didnt even knew they have a nwe website now. thanks for the link.

I have the 1st reissue from Avantgarde Music.

Have you heard of the band Funeral?

yes i have also, almost traditional sounding with female vocal and growling at the same time. i havent really listened to much of their music, partly because the album tragedies seem to be one of the most difficult cd to get.

i tend to like the bands with the roughest and most powerful growl. stuff with too much keyboard and angelic female singing tend to turn me off. despond vocalist has a very deep voice.

i dont really mean it sucks, except it kind of does, but i see COF being the first place, thats sad, and many other albums whose derserve higher placement get very loud. it seem like the most accessible stuff get to be on top.

i cant really provide my own list becuase i dont actaully listen to that many music im still exploring. i try to listen bands that place different style so i never have more than 5 bands playing the same style. sometime i have to download britney spear and eminem music just to find out what popular music sound like. right now i have no idea who j. lo or avril lavinge are.

on that list i would put brave murder day on first place, morning rise, and sound of perservence would be in the top 10 also.

ok to tell the truth i don't even listen much metal anymore or death metal in general (dont think i ever did acutally). i listen to mellow stuff nowadays. beside unholy (sort of death) there are some other good band with death element like 'saturnus' (only the first album was metal) and 'novembers doom'. 'scholamance' is a good blackish keyboardist band from the end records, with only 3 members. for melancholy type of music, i'm not a big fan, but i prefer 'lacrimas profundere' much more than MDB, i like their newer rock stuff too. people who prefer fast pace can check out 'dusk' and 'disembowelment', which are both disbanded.

one draw back with going into super underground music is that it will be very hard to find their cd........and the recording quality sometime. i mean if you're going to recommend 'thergothon' to someone in head-fi with a $500 headphone, its really not a good idea.

one thing that get me is how people call everything gothic rock music because a band turn soft, like lcarimas and anathema. gothic is pretty sounding music with dance kind of feeling (HIM, yuck). and gothic metal is way different too.

now i'm checking out prog rock (not dream threater), dark wave, acoustic, and folk. my favorite type of music includes these elements; darkness (not as in 'evil'), emptiness, atmospheric, nature, pilgrimmage (close to epical), mystical or dreamlike. basicly stuff that doesnt deal with or remind me of whats going on in reality, political, discrimitory hate, or violence. self hatred music is good though, but often are very unhealthy, especially when you take the music serious like i do. best advice i can give is...dont get into funeral doom. its just no good, ....no enjoyment.

wth am i yabbering about, i should go to bed.

What an illogical, lame, grammatically error strewn ramble with no recognition of personal preference.

DA, you must continue to periodically post your list of favourites. They're a staple, and deservedly so.

This also true for KR...'s, Nacher's and others.I find lists of favorite bands/recordings to be fascinating and educational, especially from those with good taste.

Actually anyone with the guts to post a list of personal favorites deserves a certain amount of respect.

Apr 28, 2004 at 11:15 AM Post #645 of 671
DA's lists are HIS opinion. We're all welcome to agree or disagree as we see fit. But to call his list sad is just plain impolite. It's like saying "What? You like the color green, you are SO wrong?!?!?".

None of us agrees 100% on music, it's a personal thing (for example I still like Arch Enemy's latest album better than any of their others, I am sure some here disagree, they are welcome to that. But it's MY personal preference).

So if you really feel the need to disagree, at least give your own opnion instead of just stepping on someone elses.
