First off hello I've been lurking here for about 3 weeks now. Great site!

I thought I'd narrowed down to the monster turbine pro coppers, then I read the golds are better bass, but the coppers are better but lack the bass of the gold....etc.

To be honest they don't have to be MTP's at all. I was using ER-4Ps lovely sound but no bass for my music taste.

My music source will be the iPhone4. The volume control/mic isn't essential but would be nice. Can those be bought separately?

Thanks for any help provided.

how about Ortofon e-Q7?
Balanced armature driver, I use them to listen to trance and electronic music.
Also IE8 is great option.
Cheaper option is Radius Dual Diaphragm DDM, not well known outside this forum but I prefer them over IE8.
Great base and best sound for even better price. ($170-180) depending where you live at , USA or UK

Here are DDM review

What are your favorite songs?

Hmm.. do you actually plan on dancing with these IEMs? :D If so, I would not recommend the DDMs... hehe. Otherwise, they are my favourite IEM at the moment, and a lot of audio bang for buck.

It is entirely possible to buy seperate remote/mics that you can attach to give music controls to any IEM. I have two made by audio technica and Belkin - avoid the belkin, the cable dies. However, the main problem is that the microphone has to clip on to some part of your clothing, and you end up with a very long cable - inconvenient enough that I just go without and plug my headphones directly into the iPhone 4.

You'll have to tell us your other priorities - isolation, build quality, comfort, etc? The DDM's are reviewed overall more positively than the Monsters, but then again they can be difficult for some people to wear, and will offer barely any isolation because they are ported. It's also worth considering the Audio Technica CK90 Pros, as they are going to be lighter and more comfortable than the Monster turbines, and thanks to their incredible speed will really do well especially with electronic dance music.
