Don't forget the Samsung YP-Z5 with later versions of the firmware was gapless (with MP3 anyway)

Lets see: playlists, check! drag & drop for unconverted video files, check! gapless for mp3, check!

How's the start up time on Firmware V2.31 Beta2? I've compared the shipping version (V2.21) with V2.30 side-by-side and the latter loads slower. I'm concerned with each FW upgrade (?), whether the load times are getting longer.

It loads faster than any other player I have. Not sure the S9 got slower over time, it's more or less blazing compared to the database rebuild of a Sansa Clip, or a Cowon D2/O2.

Not that the S9's startup matters much for me anyways, since it's always been among the faster players out there.

It's hard to determine load times after each FW flash. I got the chance to clock two S9s side-by-side and V2.21 loads faster. Of the top three touchscreen PMPs, the Sony X has the fastest load time to the home page, followed by the S9 (V2.21), and touch 2G (2.2.1).

BTW, how do you extend the shutdown time on the S9?

My S9 takes no more than 10secs to start up (from completely being "off"). It's was slower w/the original 2.31 Beta fw, but w/this (COWON S9 Firmware V2.31 Beta2) it's back to it's normal speedy self.

I loaded Firmware V2.31 Beta2 over the weekend and it clocks in at 3.9 seconds from the off position to the home page. Before flashing, I timed V2.21 at 4.1 seconds so kudos to the Cowon team for speeding things up! The touch 2G comes in at a whopping 17 seconds, while the X loads in an impressive 1.9 seconds.

I figured out the Auto off shutdown is buried under Settings > Time > Timer.

So just to confirm, as this is breaking point for me - the s9 now has gapless on mp3 & FLAC?

If so I will purchase right now.

I did indeed read the thread, however it was only mentioned in one or two posts, and on intially searching for confirmation elsewhere I came up empty.

Gapless is a big deal to me as I listen almost exclusively to electronic music, including mix CDs and other albums where tracks 'blend' into each other. As a result of this I wanted to be absolutely certain before I made the purchase.

I've now found the relevant info. on the Cowon site and I'm going to place my order shortly.
