Alto saxophone player, Paul Desmond (acclaimed for his work with Dave Brubeck and Gerry Mulligan, among many others) was also known fos witty, inonic comments that riffed on this or that. The one below was inspired by T.S. Elliott's famous line, "This is how the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper."

Of Vogue fashion models, he said, “Sometimes they go around with guys who are scuffling — for a while. But usually they end up marrying some cat with a factory. This is the way the world ends, not with a whim but a banker.”​
