Hey,

I'm currently the owner of a pair of AKG K702s but am really considering making the switch to HD600s. Should I? Why or why not? Also, what should I expect (similarities and differences) if I do make the switch? Thanks for any help with this dilemma.

The main reason I'm looking to switch is because I heard the HD600s and really liked how the sounded (a lot like the K702s), really liked how comfortable they were (the K702s are kind of big for me), and they're still compatible with my amp (the Objective 2).

The HD600 are darker but marvelous phones.
The HD800 are brighter but steps ahead of both the K702 and HD600.

If you like the quality of the K702, but find the treble too bright or wearing, go for the HD600.

If you're prepared to sacrifice your wallet on the altar of topline amps and sources, then go for the HD800. You'll be glad you did.

If you seek the ultimate headfi trip, go Stax electrostatic.

This is my honest opinion. I have all 3 headphones mentioned here and some Stax.

But the caveat still applies = YMMV.

By dark, it means that the treble is not so prominent.

It means that for a given volume level, there doesn't seem to be as much detail retrieval.

It does mean more bass, and no listening fatigue after half an hour - 2 hours.

Hmm... do you think that the HD600s lack treble, or they're just not treble heavy? I don't want to buy a non-detailed headphone but I liked the way the HD600s sounded, but that was only one listen.

I didn't find that the HD800s lacked bass at all. I thought it was present and really well balanced. But then again I am not huge into bass and think the K702s aren't that bad with bass, so you might have a completely different opinion. Some people say that the HD800s have a treble spike like the K701/2s.

The treble is detailed, just needs more volume to access it.

but what is bright sound signature?

It means the treble is prominent.

Don't get confused between the bass or treble being recessed or emphasised with them not being reproduced at all.

They certainly have a treble spike at about 6KHz.
I did the anax mod on my set to tame it.

The K702 and HD 600 compliment each other extremely well. You should own both.

That's expensive....

I think we were warned about that when we came here.
