Comparison: Denon AH-D2000, AH-D5000, and Headphile "Darth Denon"

Thanks for the review Skylab! I had been looking for a closed HP to replace my K701 (which I really, really liked) and the D2000 seems to be it. So, this morning, I sold my 701 and promptly ordered the D2000 from Audiocubes. Now the wait...

I must be lucky or something because I managed to order during Japan's Golden Week which is a National Holiday in Japan. Per the email from Audicubes, it will take 2 - 3 days to ship them from Japan. During a non-holiday, I imagine the shipping would be within a day.

That's OK...I have no regrets buying from Audiocubes as their price+shipping was the same as PJ and I'm supporting a Head-Fi sponsor.

You're not alone ecclesand - I did the same thing via eBay seller shipping from Japan. Received email that because of the holiday he would not be shipping the d2000 until Wednesday. Eh, no worries - I'll just be burning them in and waiting for the first reports after Larry has modded a pair into Screened DarthDenon............or decide whether or not they are basically for me - or not.

Skylab - thanks for the excellent and informative review (should I also mention tantalizing?)! I was also curious regarding the build-quality disparity between the D2000 and D5000: are the two indistinguishable apart from the housing? Is the D2000 indeed assembled in China while the D5000 is assembled in Japan? Are the leather earpads of exact quality between the two? I apologize for the deluge of queries and thank you again for the time (of course no fun at all was had by you during the "ordeal"). Regards.

Some D5000 are made in China too as was reported in D5000 thread.

I keep returning to the same mathematical dilemma: is the 5000 worth more than twice the purchase price of the 2000? There are obvious subtle differences, many of which make the 5000 superior, and I know Head fi thrives of subtle differences, but is the subtle worth $300?

The D2000 is lighter than the D5000 and therefore more comfy. There are always variations between the drivers in a headphone, so it's going to be the luck of the draw. I heard two K701s side by side and they sounded more different from each other than the difference between the K701 and DT880, or K701 and Denon D2000.
