Coming soon: Comparison of $99-$150 sealed headphones

I almost have 200 hours on my new ES7's. But still on the fence if I am going to keep them. I guess I am just too used to the Grado feel and sound.

I hope there's some good closed cans that sound somewhat like Grados. I like the sound but wish I could get it in an isolated closed headphone.

Wow, the more time I spend listening to the ES7's the more I love their sound. They're addicting and I have no intentions of getting rid of them ever probably.

I'd still have to go with my RP-21's though. They have this silky smooth sound that is so pleasant. It's hard to describe but they just sound so smooth. I think they're probably one of the most enjoyable headphones I've heard. I've read that the d1000 might perform slightly better in some areas, which is expectable with the price increase, but I wonder if they have that warm buttery sound like the rp-21's that I enjoy so much....I think most RP-21 owners know what I'm talking about.

It's too bad ortho's can't sound good in a closed-dynamic housing because, that aside, I bet the YH-100's you have could compete pretty darn well.

Are you going to give the reviews all at once? Or are you going to give some input as you go on? I really want to know how these things sound...at least a summary to begin with and then later go into the specifics. I plan to buy one of these and would love to see this review as soon as possible. Any idea when it will be done? Thanks for doing this.

I see Skylab has already posted a little review of the EA RP-21 on headphonereviews.org

http://headphonereviews.org/headphon...eadphoneId=269

"The RP21's sound far better than they should for the $149 (easily gotten for $99). They have very good bass weight and depth. The mids are reasonably open and transparent. The highs are a little chalky and dry, but removing the foam helps this somewhat (but of course voids the warranty). The stock earpads could be a lot better - the RP21's are much more comfortable with pads from a Beyerdynamic DT770 (but you need to get the pleather pads or you lose a lot of bass). The RP21 isolated very well, better than a lot of other closed cans.

A very good closed headphone for the money."

WOW, you people are IMPATIENT! I have listened enough to give you this:

SOUND QUALITY:

1. Sennheiser HD25-1 (recabled with Headphile BlackMax)
2. Denon D1000
3. Equation RP21 (with foam removed and Beyer pads)
4. Audio Technica ES7
5. AKG K81DJ
6. Koss MV1

COMFORT:
1. Denon D1000
2. Equation RP21 (with Beyer pads; otherwise the Koss is better)
3. Koss MV1
4. Audio Technica ES7
5. AKG K81DJ
6. Sennheiser HD25-1

ISOLATION:
1. Sennheiser HD25-1
2. Koss MV1
3. Equation RP21
4. AKG K81DJ
5. Audio Technica ES7
6. Denon D1000

PORTABILITY:
1. Sennheiser HD25-1
2. Denon D1000
3. Audio Technica ES7
4. AKG K81DJ
5. Equation RP21
6. Koss MV1

OVERALL EVALUATION:
1. Sennheiser HD25-1 (recabled with Headphile BlackMax)
2. Denon D1000
3. Equation RP21
4. Audio Technica ES7
5. AKG K81DJ
6. Koss MV1

There. You'll have to wait for detailed qualitative descriptions of these variables for each headphone, though

Also, note that I KNOW that the HD25-1's are more than $150, but they are the "reference" in this case.

Oh, and here is a picture:

Not surprised the hd25-1 is number 1 in most of those

I am surprised you said the Denon is more portable than the ES7. What factors went into this?

2 things:

1. That shiny finish on the ES7 just screams "scratch me!"
2. It seems to me that the D1000 is a little more robustly built.

Foldable doesn't really help me. YMMV.

I see. So, what does portability mean to you? Whenever I see it, I think of smallness, compactness, easy to carry, etc.

I actually think foldables get in the way of things. It's nice for long term storage but when you're taking them out and throwing them in a bag actually folding them takes forever.

And those Koss's are ugly. And apparently sound pretty ugly too.
