I am looking for a very comfortable set of headphones, plain and simple. Obviously they must sound good, emphasis on bass if possible. Portability would also be a plus, short cable a must... Price is open for now. Anything along these lines?

Beyerdynamic DT770. The 80 ohm version does ok on portables. Not brilliant sounding, but as good as anything closed at the price, is bass heavy, and is about as comfortable as headphones get. Also built like a tank and used widely in studios everywhere.

I second the Beyer DT 770 80 ohm. They're the most comfortable set of cans I've ever worn, and have excellent bass.
However, they are not very portable and the cord is quite long (and is not detachable).

If you prefer open headphones, the DT 990's are just as comfy, and have great bass for an open can.
Test them both out if possible - I went with the 770's though.

Ed8 is one of the most comfortable small sized portable that sounds excellent.

My DT990s are the most comfortable cans I've ever tried (well, along the DT880s I used to own).  They blow away my HD600s in comfort.  The 990s have great bass, and about the best I can expect from open cans in that price bracket.

Perhaps a sony xb700? Those are bassy and very comfortable with cushions like head pillows...though the pads are rather large and maybe not exactly portable.
