Shucks gotit, I'm inclined to buy the hype about the Tiga D now. Sure, State's qb couldn't hit a cowbell, but you got to love the size on that side of the ball. Every corner looked like a friggin' 4.0 40 LB out there.

VT in Death Valley should be fun next week. Tell Lester to take it easy on the Hokies. They're mourning. At least give them a field goal.

In the Pac, anything is possible. ASU has a ton of home games this year, including Cal and USC. They have a shot, but they'll probably need help. Cal is a strong team, as is Oregon. No one in the Pac-10 is in awe of anyone, even Stanford can rise up and bite someone any given week.

I'd be happy with a Holiday Bowl berth for ASU, realistically.

That's the thing about the PAC10, on any given Saturday just about any team can win, which keeps it exciting. This is not true of the other conferences, where generally one or two teams dominate. Although on paper USC is definately the strongest & will likely go far.

"Beyond this year, it appears that UCLA is starting to put together some niceeeeeeeee recruiting classes."

I think UCLA and their fans are starting to believe their own hype. I don't think they will have as good of season, as they think they will.

Hype? Hype is what happens when a new headphone is released. This is gospel, Heir Metal (I reserve the right to change my mind each Saturday).

I'll give him a ring.

The blow-outs are pump-up but a bore at the same time. VT will be a touch better to watch I expect. It was hard watching Henig play put-it-up last night. With that mess, It's hard to tell yet if the secondary is that good or Henig was just that bad.

Best part: I got to see my man, Perrilloux, take over in the last quarter. Obviously, I'm excited about that kid.

Go Bears

I actually think Tennessee will win, but I'm hopeful.

yea... Stanford might get a W this year... but they are not a threat to the top of the pac 10.

totally agree... UCLA is way overhyped this year.

Thanks for the info Pac'er's.

Of note, I did say "beyond this season". To me, it appears UCLA is puttin' some hooves in the stable. Ya think coaching is the only reason SC has been winning so many games?

Don't take this wrong because I'm a Big XII fan. My favorite conference is one more bad non-conference record and bowl flop season from being replaced in the big six by the WAC.

But...USC has either won the Pac or tied for the Conference championship the last four years. Let's compare the other conferences.

Outright champs (championship game)

SEC: Florida, Georgia, Auburn, LSU
ACC: Florida State (2), Wake Forest, Virginia Tech
Big 12: Oklahoma (2), Texas, Kansas State

No championship game:

Big Ten: Ohio State (2(1co), Michigan(2(1co), Penn State (co), Iowa (co)
Big East: Louiville, West Virginia, Pittsburg (co), Boston College (co), Syracuse (co)
Pac Ten: USC (4(1co), Cal (co)

Now, I don't wish to get you guys riled up. We're all passionate about our conferences, and my knowledge of the Pac pails compared to the BigTen and SEC, but without resorting to flaming, how can anyone objectively make a statement like the above?

Like I said, I follow the Big 12 and the Sooners. No matter how hyped or good OU is that year, everyone in the conference give the Sooners their best shot. I don't think that's limited to one conference. In fact, I think that's fair to say about any conference, not just your favorite. Otherwise, you're just a big homer.

It's my mistake. I should of phrased the question differently.

Thanks for the info guys.

Probably a little of both. Not to stroke your fan ego any more, but you can't coach up size and speed. Man, that's an impressive looking defense.

I was watching that game and getting angry. "OU offered that kid. There's another one the Sooners offered. OU was in his top three...etc. etc. etc."

You're right though. The litmus test for Tigerland is next week. I can't wait. VT hasn't done very well in the early season slug fests lately, so I either see an LSU route, or Tech squeaking and possibly spring boarding to the BCS title game after next Saturday.

2005- Oklahoma 19, USC 55. that was not a "co"

the deal with SC is that their coaching is really the best in college football, but I don't think that that is the only thing behind their success (they usually have the best recruiting class in the nation). As a person who's seen enough pac games, i can say that SC's second half changes and resulting performances are the reason they are so good.

I think people on the west coast generally have a different theoretical outlook when it comes to football. For example, teams that play big-10 style football are often considered antiquated (see LA times after Rose bowl). there was a poll last year, and most people wanted to see Florida v. USC than Boise v. Florida, the rest of the country was different. Most people i know were just waiting for ohio and Michigan to be blown out by teams from the SEC or pac 10.

in any case, the pac 10 is 7-4 in bcs games, which isn't bad.

Cal will win, because Tennessee's starting QB broke his pinky, and their starting RB isn't even going to play. There is no way Cal is complacent enough to repeat what happened last year.

They push a panic inspiring Trojan horse through the SEC, squishing all under its frictionless, wooden wheels' path.

Perrilloux stays out of trouble; that is, he does nothing monumentally, freakin' dumb. LSU dominates for years to come.

I put this in Times New Roman without any provincialism or bias.

Sam, I had no idea you were from NOLA. I came down last weekend with some friends on a whim.. First time I've ever been..

LSU whipped our asses last night..

Do you travel to any of LSU's away games?

I was waiting for that, but what does that have to do with my point? I'm having trouble seeing that, unless you're saying SC's level has been so high that explains their Pac Ten dominance. IMO that's very valid. Sometimes, special programs come along, and no matter how good the rest of the conference is, said programs dominate. SC has been on quite a run.

Look at the quote I referenced. I wasn't trashing the Pac at all. I was defending the other conferences. Don't be so defensive.

That's a bold statement. I doubt it but can't prove you wrong, so I'll take your word for it.

The west coast attitudr opinion is interesting. However, you may want to consider that the whole of college football history isn't wrapped up in 2006. Don't get caught up in only last year.

Take the last twenty years for example.

In the Rose Bowl (only Pac vs BigTen), the Pac has 8 wins, the BigTen 8. To me, an admitted Pac Ten neophyte, it looks like neither conference can claim an advantage.

As far as BigTen's antiquated offenses, try playing football in Ann Arbor Michigan for a season and see how far West Coast offense will take you. It gets windy on the plains and off the lakes.

it doesn't. neither am i claiming that the pac is better than any others, because i actually think it's the fourth best conference (SEC, big XII, Big 10 are tops). what i am saying is that USC did win a championship on it's own and that USC's coaching is pretty darn good. I've never seen a team go through so many prime time games and win them the way USC has done.

I'm also not talking about history... i still remember Wisconsin v. UCLA in the rose bowl... what i am saying is that perceptions of how the game should played make people think that the sec and pac 10 are the most interesting conferences. i'll put it simply: if usc looses to Nebraska, no paper out here would talk about how well Nebraska played, they'll blame USC's quarterback... yea, i know.. it's a little irrespective of history and somewhat naive.

basketball analogy: try selling ben howland's style of basketball to people who grew up watching John Wooden... it's gonna be hard, and unless they win, i'll be impossible.

Not yet, but a friend has a crazy converted school bus (we are talking super fan), and he's been bugging me to do a road trip.

Really, last night wasn't that much fun to watch. It sucks to see the fans in the stands so dejected. I guess you can't really have a bleeding heart when it come to college football.

Official Trojan homer checking in!
biggrin.gif

The hype this year is insane, it's like 2005 all over again. The analysts will be pissing all over USC every week trying to look like geniuses when/if they loose. It gets old after a while, that's for sure, but if it's the price to be paid for being on top, it's worthwhile.

To me the biggest roadblock to the title game this year is definitely @Cal. Of course, that could change if they get rolled by Tennessee tomorrow. Notre Dame has nothing this year, and will be lucky to avoid annihilation. The Trojans will be pissed as hell and ready to tear UCLA apart after what happened last year. Nebraska looks like it could be tough, but considering the SC record against Big12/10 and SEC teams over the last few years, it's not very worrying. I'm sure the Huskers have a nice team this year, but Sam Keller is certainly no Vince Young
biggrin.gif

That said, I'm still not THAT sold on JD Booty. He doesn't exude the dominating power of Palmer nor the steadfast determination of Leinart. He just seems like a pretty good QB surrounded by a bunch of great talent. He will have to show his worth this year, with all the young WR's and RB's. In that regard it's much like Leinart's second year (2004), however even in his first year, Leinart seemed much more poised and tough than Booty.

After watching LSU the other day, I'd love to see USC square off with them. Speed on speed, and it would be insane. We'll just have to see if LSU can survive all those tough SEC foes. I hope so. It would be a much better game than Louisville, Michigan (ha! how many times do we have to crush them?), or the somewhat depleted looking Texas squad (you sure you guys are going to lose to them this year, virometal?)

BTW I wish USC was still playing Hawaii like they did a few years ago, that would have really been a game I'd pay to see. Could the Colt keep gunning it so well against Pete's forces? Back when we used to play Hawaii, ol' Timmy Chang didn't stand a chance. But Brennan at least seems to be a different kind of guy. I guess only an NFL season will tell us for sure...
