I'm looking to buy some over the ear closed headphones for mainly rock music. I have a budget of around $100-150 but wouldn't mind only spending around $75. I recently purchased a pair of Sennheiser HD448's after reading all the rave reviews, but the bass is lacking pretty badly with them. I don't want something really bass heavy, but I do want a solid kick that I can feel at the same time.

Any suggestions as to what I should be looking for? Thanks

The M50's have been a pair of cans I've been very intrigued about, but I can't seem to find a great deal on them.

The Shure's look pretty solid especially the 840's. I'd love to get them for around 100 though, but then I should probably go with the 440's.

Still looking though and open to more input. Thanks for the suggestions though guys. Keep em coming, and if you know of anywhere to find any bargains please shoot them my way! :)

I'm down to the 840's and the 440's my only issue now is that I'm not sure if I should pay the extra 50 or so for the 840's. I read the 840's aren't ideal for use with mp3 players without an amp. Can anyone give any input on this? Is it worth the price difference? Thanks

You can find threads about that, you can check this one

On few words, the 840's sound fine unamped...but they need a little more power to sound good.
(have't compared both personally)
maybe someone who have compared both can share experiences.

although that's very true, they're not closed. Most open headphones I have.

For closed headphone for rock music, the balance is a bit difficult, good treble+power bass+balanced mid for vocals, i must say try Ultrasone HFI780. This headphone is a bit uncharacteristic for closed units, since the soundstage are actually very wide that it feels like open headphone.

For portable, you must try cJays with medium foam pad.
