I've been enjoying the new Deutsche Grammophon: the originals - legendary recordings volumes 1 and 2 lately. It's the best collection of classical music I've ever seen, and it actually already has a lot of my favorite recordings, as well as a bunch of others which are top notch.

I found a very special CD a few days ago.

Rendition of Prokofiev and Rachmaninov Piano concetos Nos. 3, with Mikhail Pletnev on piano and Rostropovich as a conductor with Russian National Orchestra.

Sublime.

Some distinctly non-audience friendly (and non-guitarist--I've tried playing a few of these!) pieces, but they are very well played and recorded, if a bit distant in sonic perspective.

The Mozart today. Sublime.

Dare I say that I prefer two guitars over a harpsichord for accompaniment? Well, I do! Beautifully played and recorded.

  What about harpsichord vs. piano?

I generally prefer piano.

Harpsichord i am a purist when it comes to execution instrument but i also have piano, organ and string quartet versión of goldverg variations so not too inflexible

Yeah there's an album that compiles all of those versions together.

When it comes to accompaniments, I generally prefer harpsichord, but for pieces such as Goldberg variations where the lead instrument is either piano, harpsichord, or organ, I prefer piano. Although it definitely varies by piece. Bach's Toccata and Fugue, for example, sounds much better with an organ.

If Bach lived today he wouldn't touch a bloody harpsicord
