The positioning is a good point. KEF R series usually have a tuned bass port, which means they need to be a good distance from any surrounding walls. The LS50's , I think are totally enclosed, so positioning within the room is less critical.

Yes they are.  LS50 even sounds great in the bathroom.

If I were to choose an active speaker, one of the Dynaudio active speakers would be nice.

Those are terrific. I also like the Focal and especially the Genelec 8050B.

Not released yet, but I have seen information that a gloss black edition of the Hugo is to be released not too far in the future.
I'm personally finding the silver to look the best but there may be some of you who are interested :)
Cheers.

Wonder what are some good desktop active speakers for under $600 to pair with the Hugo. Any ideas?
I heard some good Focals but I've never heard Genelecs before.

Genelec 8010 is 395 a pair.  Tiny versions of the 8050B.  Find a pair and listen to it.

I've also been looking at Audioengine A5s for a while now plus their subwoofer would be great.
My home system's doing okay but my desk only has a headphone chain so I'm trying to figure things out.
One question I have regarding using the Hugo for a desktop speaker chain is, since I will use the Hugo around my house, outside, and so on, I'll have to plug/unplug the RCA jacks all the time. Do you guys think the RCA connection on the Hugo's too feeble for that?
Otherwise, I could use the Hugo just for headphone and get something cheap like Schiit DAC+ their volume control or an Audinst HMX-2 which my friend is using with his Audioengine A2+s.

No, this one says it's incompatible with all my devices.
I have USB Audio Player Pro working fine with Hugo on Samsung Tab S.

My galaxy note 3 picks up Hugo via bluetooth and I can stream Spotify to Hugo with no cables.

Pretty cool.

Now, someone can make the same wireless dac/amp to use with their smartphones for much less than Hugo.

This might sound stupid, but I wonder if the Hugo works for microphone and 4-pole connector? So if I buy something like this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004SP0WAQ/ , will it work on the Hugo? Thanks.

Not certain, but I think you only end up getting one channel if you use 4 pole in a standard TRS socket.
