I also tried with my Hugo and my PMC FB1i 90 db/m and 8 ohm and it was no success, as way to low volume in a medium room and when playing with "white" volume too much distortion. Think only Dave can pull that off... unless speakers are more sensitive of course...

At 99 db, my speakers, Klipsch Heresy III, are extraordinary sensitive for "standard" 3-way speakers. But on the other hand, a speaker amp is probably a better choice

It can be variable or fixed,I used my hugo straight into a power amp and by passed my 7 half grand pre-amp and it sounded much better
