Doesn't he also need a DAC (or dac / amp combo)? I'm pretty sure "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC" means his PC is using the motherboard's cheap integrated audio.
The difference between the stock audio on both my desktop & laptop and the HRT Microstreamer is night and day (though I suspect the MS's amp isn't strong enough to bring the best out of the HD800 and would also require an amp).
