Alright. Download this zip file:
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/vie...h120_7pre4.zip
Put the bootloader.iriver from that on the root of the h120 drive and boot into rockbox.
set "show files" to "all"
go to the Files entry in the main menu and look for bootloader.iriver in the root of the drive. Select it and hold down the navi button to bring up the context menu.
Select "Open With..."
select "iriver_flash" and execute that
It should display a confirmation message. If it does, press "Play" and it should install the new bootloader.
If not, tell me exactly what iriver_flash displays on the screen.

I am skeptical.
What's on the screen right now?
What's on the screen right now?
nothing just brings me back to the previous menu. Maybe i did not press play long enough?
BTW, i accidentally got ran the boot and im stuck on the ROLO executing... screen how to you get out of it, i tried the reset.
ok i got out of the screen, i tried this again and i did notice that the screen was blank for a moment and i can hear the HD spinning with the red light on. This happens very quickly.

Yeah don't accidentally run that. You probably have to disconnect the battery again if the reset button doesn't work - but try holding down the reset button for like 30 seconds.
i vaguely recall that when i last used the iriver flash plugin, some things were selected by pressing the navi button and some were selected by tilting the navi switch to the right.
I can't give you exact instructions. I don't have an H120 with me.

OK, well, I just upgraded an h120 to the 7pre4 bootloader.
select bootloader.iriver, press and hold the navi button to bring up the context menu, select "open with", select "iriver_flash"
It asked if it should update the bootloader, press 'play' to confirm
Pressed (and did not hold) "Play" - which is, you know, the top button on the right-hand side.
Flashing rockbox.iriver and rombox.iriver was pretty much the same procedure.
Note that you only have to ROLO boot the firmware before flashing it if it's a different version than you are already running. If you're booting 3.3 from the disk and then installing 3.3 into flash, you don't have to ROLO first. Just flash rockbox.iriver and rombox.iriver.
Then select rombox.iriver as the default by following the bootloader instructions.
And, as they say, wah-lah.

I smell a brick coming on, I found the easiest way to do this is to use a CF card reader to unzip the RB firmware to the root level of the CF card (fat32 formatted) meanwhile boot to the original iriver FW and flash the H120 FW with the patch. (RB 3.2 onwards) supports CF cards out of the box
of course you've checked the RB forums to see that the CF card you have is supported for iriver?? i'm running a kingston 32gb, which wasnt listed, but the 16gb of the same type was, so I took a punt (not recommended) but when you are flashing the iriver, make sure that you are either plugged into a charger or have the iriver fully charged, because if you run out of power while flashing it, you will have a rare and rapidly drying up brick.

The OP has a card that strictly gives him an ATA error when he tries to boot it. Some people say they have a CF card that boots without errors with the v6 bootloader, but this is the exception rather than the rule.
ATA errors when trying to boot on CF is a known issue, and the known fix is to update to v7pre4 (or later) of the bootloader.
It appears at this time that the v7 bootloaders cannot be installed via the usual fwpatcher method. There's no reason they shouldn't be, but the way it's been compiled makes it incompatible with fwpatcher.
So the workaround is to keep the hard drive in there long enough to install the v6 bootloader via fwpatcher, boot rockbox, and use the iriver_flash plugin to install the v7 bootloader and then further to overwite the iriver firmware with the rockbox kernel.
At this point the OP has three choices.
1: Forget about the CF card and live with the hard drive
2: Find a card that doesn't give him the ATA error (which may be difficult to find)
3: Install the v7pre4 bootloader and write the rockbox kernel to flash.

The A-Data 32gb CF card is the only one that works reliably without the ATA error!!!!
I have converted 2 of my H120s to the A-Data card with no problems at all. You will also get the ATA error if you install the adapter upside-down. Yes, the card will fit in it that way!!!

Darn I dont want to mess it up if I can avoid it, so I guess ill look for this A-Data 32GB CF but it appears to be sold out. I checked newegg and amazon, anyone know of anywhere to get one?
Just to be sure it the one that says "speedy" right?

From the iRiver forum, two CF cards have successfully worked, the A-Data and Pretec. Transcend does not work.
