The "ata error: -80" is a known issue with the old bootloader with at least many CF cards, and with going from even the new bootloader usb mode to rockbox.

If it turns out that this is just the bootloader usb mode, reset it by inserting a thin object through the hole in the bottom, of course.

I'm using this adapter

I've read in the iRiver forum that the Transcend CF does not work. There may be others. The A-Data and Pretec (very expensive) CFs work.

I've also read that the Transcend card doesn't work. Kingston and TopRam work though.

I use the new bootloader so i can boot the rockbox kernel from onboard flash. First button press to playing music (with resume on anyway) is about 2.5 seconds now.

Alright I just got the Battery to work turns out all i had to do was reverse the red and black wires. But accidentally I broke the hold switch

wonder if anyone did this too.

I looked at the link to how to cf mod it, and i have to basically install new bootloader, then flash it, then have to change some settings for the new bootloader to work with the CF?

But I got a few questions like am i suppose to put the new bootloader on the root of disk or in the .rockbox folder?

Alright This is what I got so far up to now I have 1) replaced the battery by switching the polarity. 2) I have updated to the current build 3.3 for rockbox. 3) I then go follow the instructions to go to the folder "rockbox" and then go to bootloader.iriver then select open with "iriver_flash".

3) my problem is it says that my bootloader is incompatable. I downloaded the newest bootloader to the root of the drive but I am not sure how i would go about updateing the bootloader, before running "iriver_flash"

I'm pretty sure you need to install the new bootloader using the old method before the flashing tool will work

Edit: This turns out to be incorrect. In theory you should be able to make a v7pre4 bootloader.bin and use this to make a new fwpatcher that would save you some steps, but right now that's not actually possible for most people. The correct procedure is to boot the harddrive with the v6 (released) bootloader and use the iriver_flash plugin to load the v7pre4 bootloader.

But when I put the new bootloader on the iriver and run it it says:

Ro Lo
executing...

But then it just hangs there, so i have to disconnect the battery since for some reason the reset will not restart it. I am very sorry I have no clue how to do this, but can you been more specific, how do Patch it I did download the hex patcher but am i suppose to run the bootloader on my pc?

BTW thanks for all the help, im truly sorry I feel totally helpless even after doing some of my own digging around the net. Sorry about asking so many of these damn questions.

RoLo is for loading rockbox from within rockbox (like a soft reboot) so I'm not sure how you got to the point you're at.

Anyway, What you need to do is get a copy of the original h120 firmware (which will be a .HEX file) onto your computer and patch it with the v7-pre4 rockbox bootloader, then copy that to your h120 and boot into the original iriver firmware and run the firmware upgrade procedure in that.

It's exactly like rockboxing an h120, so, I have to assume that you were not the person who rockboxed this DAP?

I downloaded the v7-pre4 rockbox bootloader from here IriverFlashing < Main < TWiki. However it will not run on my pc. Perhaps it is because of vista?

Alright I just tried something else I got the origninal hex file and opened it with the bootloader on my pc. It then created a new .hex file that i updated on the iriver.

Look, you need to be very very careful, because you seriously run the risk of ruining your h120.

It's been over a year since i upgraded my h120 to bootloader 7-pre4 so i don't remember what i did very clearly.

Lets start with the basics.

What bootloader version flashes on the screen when you boot rockbox?

What rockbox version?

OK. Do you know which version of the iriver fw is installed? You can reboot while holding down the record button to boot into the iriver firmware.
