Cayin N6iii: Nothing is Impossible with Gen2 User-replaceable Audio Motherboard

Dec 18, 2024 at 12:20 AM Post #241 of 525
I am the other guy @aaf evo mentioned having this issue and will be getting two more IC's (brise yatano and generic) to verify if it's just the shiro IC that comes with fugaku.

Another side note that I can't remember if it was mentioned... Once I start playing music, the buzzing goes away and comes back once I stop playing any music.
Hope for the best:pray:
And please let me know how it turns out!

I demoed the N6iii today. Very likeable sound with deep, detailed bass and great resolution. I did find the treble to be a bit metallic sounding but then I was using an IE600 which is bright sounding so maybe it overemphasized it. With the Aful Performer 5+2 it wasn't so obvious. I also paired it with the Hifiman HE1000se and I think it might lack the power to drive it fully. The soundstage isn't as wide as it normally is on a desktop amp. Having said that the N6iii does a better job than my Fiio M11 Plus Ess which makes the HE1000se sound congested.

I then compared it with my DC Elite, connected to a Samsung phone connected to a powerbank. The DC Elite has a more neutral sound, less bass emphasis, and better separation. The DCE also sounds a bit more dry. I then put on the DC07 Pro which is more musical than the DCE. I find the DC07 Pro to be more musical than the N6iii, less bass heavy but not as good in soundstage or instrument separation. It's definitely got a different character to the iBasso duo and I like what I'm hearing very much. With the upcoming flexibility of swapping out the motherboards I'm all in. Placing an order tomorrow.
While the HE1000se has been optimized to be driven easier, I think it might still be a bit demanding for the N6iii alone, hook the C201 up with the C9ii might be a good option:beerchug:. We brought the C9ii to the Guangzhou show as well, you should have give it a try there!

Oh, and speaking of the show, this time I was so busy (I had to borrow demo gear from the warehouse, sort out cables, etc.,) that I didn’t get a chance to let you all know I’d be attending. If you’re at the show and need help with anything in English, feel free to reach out to me!

Actually, I sometimes attend other domestic shows as well, and if I do in the future, I’ll be sure to let you guys know!

Interested in this DAP.
I hope it is released in Japan soon.
Can’t reveal much details but, here’s some good news: the N6iii C201 will most likely be released in Japan Saturday (21st) this week!

Hope for the best:pray:

I tried the two other IC's and same result. When there is no music playing, it hums. It goes away once the music plays, but will come back if you pause or stop the music.

Unfortunately I'm a few thousand miles away from Guangzhou. But I'm sure my local store (Stars Picker) will carry it eventually. Apparently my N6iii is sitting at a warehouse getting ready to be shipped. Can't wait to get it!

I’ll forward this result to our engineers and see if they have any insights. Thanks for letting me know!

oooops! I misunderstood your post! The date of your post happened to align with the Guangzhou show, I thought you were demoing it there🤦‍♂️

Hope you enjoy it to the fullest once it arrives!

Woah, thanks for the info.
Will look out for the price. Seems really promising. Really like N7 when I tried it. So I am looking forward for this.

Screenshot_20241219_110615.jpg

Class A, hyper mode, es9039spro, PO 3.5 and 4.4 only

Basically e01 + e02 combined...

I need to get my hands on a n6iii

In a way, I'm more than ok with that.. E01 was imo the best module (even over r01), so getting that with balanced and hyper mode is a dream. I hope the r2r module will follow the same path :) all focus on PO, no lineout

Yeah it’s not the end of the world given the cards are easy to swap now :)

E203: Evolution

——Preface: Naming of Gen2 Audio Motherboard
Before we begin, let me quickly explain the naming for the Gen2 Audio Motherboard in the N6iii.

I know some of you might be wondering: "Wait, why is it E203? We haven’t seen E201 yet!"

Unlike the first generation N6ii Audio Motherboards, the Gen2 models have a three-digit naming system.
·The first digit, “2,” indicates it’s the Gen2 Audio Motherboard, whereas the first-generation boards are named E(1)01, with the “1” being omitted at the beginning.
·The last two digits represent the count number of implementations of a particular brand’s decoding chip. For instance, the first implementation of Cirrus Logic’s decoding is marked as “01,” thus it has the name C2 (2 Gen) 01 (CS’ first implementation).

If there were the 99th application, then it’d be C299
——Well, hopefully we’ll get a C299 one day hah

Now back to the E203, the "03" indicates it’s the third implementation of ESS DAC chip in Audio Motherboard form factor, with E(1)01 and E(1)02 preceding it.

History Class: E01 and E02

Before we dive into the E203 Audio Motherboard, let’s take a brief look back at the E01 and E02 Audio Motherboards introduced during the N6ii era.

Among the six audio motherboards of the N6ii, the E01 and E02 stood out as particularly unique.

The E01 offered only a single-ended 3.5mm PO output, while the E02 featured just a 4.4mm PO output. Despite their specialized design with limited features, both Audio Motherboards are well-received* by users and the market for their distinctive characteristics, and we can briefly summarized the feedback we collected over the years.

*Hey! I know some of you are big fans of the E01 and E02—don’t be shy! Give this a like to show your love for them, will ya!

The E01, with a single-ended circuit design is smooth, focused and delicate, but it had an inevitable bottleneck in its performance as reported by some of our users. It deliver relatively weaker output power, some users might find it with slightly reduced impact on transient response. The E02 is kind of reversed this characteristic, offers its own set of advantages in output power and dynamics, yet some users find it less refined compared to the E01.

Anyway, both Audio Motherboards have their own strengths and constraints, and ultimately, sound preference is subjective, there is no definitive right or wrong, its a matter of personal choice. And those were the glory days when E01 and E02 shined.

E203——The Next Level of ESS SABRE

Five years have passed, the E203 is right around the corner. It maintained our original design philosophy—“We can't please everyone, but those who are happy with it will become even happier.“

Ooops, sorry not this one

“Focusing on fewer functions, focusing on ultimate excellence”
What does 'Focus' refers to?
——We focused on headphone output functionality of E203, so it only provides Phone Out (PO).
And the ultimate excellence, refers to optimize that limited function to the highest level.

In the past, both of the E series Audio Motherboards were renowned for their excellent headphone amplification capability and each Audio Motherboard only had one phone output socket. In this round, although we are still focused on headphone amplification, E203 comes with two output sockets, namely, 3.5mm and 4.4mm PO.
