Cayin N6ii, Unlimited Possibilities: a fully modularized smart DAP

Jun 24, 2021 at 11:46 AM Post #6,407 of 8,308
The N6ii in general has a weak WiFi receiving function.

Well I actually had two N6ii before so I know but maybe I have been spoiled by DX300 and R6 2020, M8 is in between.
I don't mind too much has a lot of my Tidal collection is synced offline.

Still, I hope there is a N6iii (or N8ii) down the line compatible with a more modern Soc and bigger screen preferably compatible with N6ii card :P

In the meantime N6ii / R01 is quite a combo that competes with the best and I don't feel cheated against M8 or DX300 (with AMP11 or AMP12).

Post my quick impression vs. P6 Pro here.

Listen to some tracks with both vocal and guitar, and share some quick impressions.

Long story short: if you have not tried R2R before, please do go ahead. R01 and P6 Pro are different (I think P6 Pro is still better), but R01 is becoming quite close. Previously, P6 Pro destroyed N6ii’s other motherboards like E02. With R01, I will need to do some A/B.

The major differences are still there, some from tuning and some from the technical side. P6 Pro is more dark and R01 is more neutral. Bass head will prefer P6 Pro a lot; the bass is more impactful. Technically, P6 Pro has better details, transparency, and a slightly better soundstage (both are quite intimate though).

Overall, P6 Pro is better at conveying the emotion and R01 is less impactful yet more balanced. Still, I want to say that it is unbelievable what Cayin is able to achieve with R01. $600 (or $1800 for the Ti version) vs. $3800.

Encouraging! Thanks for the impressions (wish mine would arrive already). Did you try with the C9?

this is quite some good feedback. looks like in terms of value we are definitely squeezing a lot more from the R01. and to think this is the early phase impression. I have a feeling that R01 / Ti may give in some more positive impacts at a later point of testing.

R01 doesn't have LO

I really don't get the burn in argument on solid state components like this. But that's all I'll say because I really don't want to open this can of worms.

...

R01 uses ultra precision thin film resistors with low temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), 96 in total for both channels. These are ultra high precision, down to 0.01% (1/10,000).

And typically these type of resistors do tend to change, even very slightly, with age/burn-in. I don't have R01 with me yet, but from the experience of P6 Pro, the sound did change after about a week of burn in.

I'd wait a bit for R01 to burn in before calling the end of the game anyway... but value for money is strong in terms of SQ

Edit : Funny @twister6 and I posted at almost the same time

on a sidenote - i've noticed that there's a new case for the Ti users. Those having both the old and new one -- how is it guys? Which do you prefer?
On a design perspective the holes at the back of the new case seems nice and edgy but I doubt that would be good in the long run given that some parts of the back is exposed. what do you all think?

I know but nor does Hugo2 and that pairs very well with the C9.

Of course, nothing is wrong with it, as long as you are not overdriving C9 input with high voltage like some did with DX300 and high gain setting (stock amp11). But the reason why people were going nuts over A02 was due to its clean LO without any amplification stage, to have clean DAC output going into the external amplifier without any intermediate coloration/saturation. For sure, you can drive C9 with your H2 or WM1Z or output of R01. But specifically to R01, you will not be driving C9 with a clean output of its internal R-2R DAC, but instead will be double-amping it, and that could even contribute to more pleasant analog distortion/saturation tonality.

There are no set rules, as long as you are enjoying the sound :)
