So I won't have to format the 128gb SD card in fat32 once I get a hold of let's say an 4gb SD card and upgrade the firmware through the 4gb SD card ???

Yes, thats correct, a 4GB microSD will cover the firmware upgrade function alright, you can keep the 128GB in exFAT or FAT32 file format at your convenient.

You can/should get Kingston 8GB microSD for under $4 (shipped as add-on) on amazon.  I got half a dozen of those and use it for fw upgrades and quick DAP testing.

You can download Cayin N6 firmware from the following page:
http://en.cayin.cn/news.asp?keys=222

The download page had listed the upgrade requirements and procedure. Please make sure you are using a TF card formatted in FAT32 file system when you perform firmware upgarde. N6 support exFAT and FAT32 for regular use, but when come to firmware upgrade, only FAT32 can be used.

What are the changes to the sound? Or just formats supported?

Cayin didn't intentionally modify the sound of the DAP through firmware, so the new firmware are primarily functional improvement to start with. Implication to sound signature only happened when some of the firmware optimization involved power management and algorithm.

Since Cayin DAP allows roll back to previous firmware and that is a 5 minutes job (including download time), I suggest you try out the v2.0 and V3.1 firmware and arrive at your own conclusion. I do come across a few users prefer the v2.0 but from functional point of view, version 3.1 is the one that I recommended.

As we have just released a major firmware update to N5, we are now busy with transporting the DoP and M3U feature to N6, we can't make it within Christmas, but we shall work at full speed to deliver these new features to N6 users ASAP. :beerchug:

Great don't forget about us. Us n6 users are still here:wink::wink:

Definitely not, I am carrying the N6 with me all the time, and enjoyed 2-3 hours of fine music through my beloved N6 everyday, I sure will make sure the N6 will be updated promptly.
