I have not seen any consistency in freezing between the two cards, or the type of file (FLAC or MP3).
FWIW, I have never had a freeze while playing back podcasts. Podcasts are downloaded and stored on the internal memory and are low resolution MP3 files.

I have included a comparison between Cayin N5ii and Opus #1s in my Opus #1s review!

More details to come in my full Cayin N5ii review, but in a few words, if you are looking for streaming and other higher features, N5ii surely is a sweet spot for a budget entry :)

(From the start, if you use Streaming, Opus #1s will not be very interesting, it is a very basic Music Only DAP :) )

Excerpt from the review :
Opus #1s vs Cayin N5ii - We should start with the obvious, Cayin N5ii has a lot more features than #1s, coming with Streaming abilities and a lot more usage potential, for those who are into this type of thing. Cayin N5ii also comes with two microSD slots, so it does make a pretty interesting device, being really well-priced and very very attractive. In side, N5ii is smaller than #1s by a good margin in every direction, but since we use Mi Max 2 as a smartphone, we usually prefer larger displays for easier control. Cayin N5ii had a few bugs to sort out at first, but now it is getting stable, while #1s has been absolutely stable since the first moment we received it. The display, on the other hand, has much better color, much better contrast, much better brightness, larger size and looks better on Opus #1s, while it is smaller on Cayin N5ii. The overall navigation, on the other hand, is more natural and feels more native on N5ii, where with Opus #1s, we got used to it, but it isn't always the most intuitive navigation. Cayin N5ii can sideload apps and has Hiby support, while #1s does not have any of those features. The sound is more neutral on Cayin N5ii, with a slightly colder and more aggressive approach, thing which we actually like a lot, as it also feels a tad more revealing. The soundstage is similar in size, and there is a similar amount of overall detail, although on N5ii it is more expressed. In the end the two devices are very different, N5ii being a multi-purpose device with a much wider usage scenario, covering even #1s's main usage scenario as it features two microSD slots, but it is a smaller device, more nimble, easier to use with one hand for people with smaller hands, Opus #1s having the better display, and more driving power available to it, along with a warmer sound and a more laid-back presentation with a slightly more effortless and less aggressive presentation. They serve very different usage scenarios, and we feel that users will be more attracted to one of them, depending on their usage scenarios and tastes, the device design being rather different as well.

Oh, thanks, I forgot to quote the comparison itself as I was a tad tired when I posted it :)

No problem :) George

BTW, I noticed that you said Opus 2 instead of Opus 1s in the ADSR and PRaT section.

Using line out from the N5ii to the O2 amp currently.

Sounds are clearer and sharper, bass is tighter and more accurate, detail and articulation is better, instrument separation is improved by quite a lot and soundstage is larger with a lot more depth and a bit more width.

It sounds a lot more holographic now but still not as holographic as the A&Ultima SP 1000. I'd say it's 70-80% there though.

It sounds a touch thinner occasionally too sharp especially on the upper treble (sabre coldness?) now but overall I'm really enjoying it :)

That holographic sound......

Hi,

It's really useful to hear your observations with the O2 amp . I love the sound of the Cayin N5ii DAP....but am currently in a position of almost giving up on it due to repeated instances of the, now widely reported, audio pausing/drop out bug and problems scanning for tracks (especially on SD card slot 2). After FW updates, numerous 'double wipes', factory resets etc...these critical problems still remain :-(. Another option I've seen is good deals on the 1st Gen Fiio X7 with AM2 amp for under £300. I would be ever so grateful if any experienced head-fi members could let me know how the sound compares with this configuation to the Cayin N5ii..and also how stable they feel the X7 1st gen runs with the very latest Fiio FW 3.3.4 installed. Any advice would be warmly welcomed.

I would suggest, since you seem to appreciate the N5ii sound quality wise, to wait until the new fw update is released at the end of this month and then decide whether to replace it with something else or not.

According to a Headphonics reviewer :
The X7 still stacks up fairly well actually and its USB DAC seems to work better than the new USB DAC of the X7ii. Of course with the amp modules you are going to get a touch more power and the AM2 is more musical sounding with more low-end body than the N5ii. However, it is also noisier and will have noise and hiss levels than the N5ii.

And according to a headphonia reviewer :
when it comes down to sound the X7 is more refined than the Cayin. But when it comes to usability, the Cayin > Fiio. so that’s a tough one. I personally never seem to pick up the X7, but I do use the N5ii.

I think amp modules make a big difference here. The AM2 seems to have a smoother and warmer sound according to the headphonics reviewer. Not sure about the rest. I've heard that the AM3A is the best amp module though.

Warning: Bug Complaint Ahead

I had the random pause (freezing) issue again last night. I was playing a SACD ISO. Paused quite a few times and I eventually gave up using the unit.

It also pauses when transferring files from the PC to the Cayin over USB. It simply can't transfer files from one memory card to another. It dies after about one or two songs.

I still think that the Cayin needs to go back and look at the USB bus on this unit. I am sure there is some way to detect time outs and restart processes.

This unit is so close to being great but the software is holding it back.
