Cavalli Liquid Gold

If your profile is at all current, that's a huge jump in cost for your amp.  Something like a Liquid Glass might be more prudent, especially as it's having its run earlier than the Lau. It's really good with a variety of vintage orthos, and pictures are plentiful at various stages of production for the curious. I personally find it to be the sweet spot in CA's lineup, with the LAu too rich for my blood as a headphone-only amp and the LF not his best effort.

I know what the Liquid Gold costs, but not what a production unit looks like on the inside. (I'd enjoy a look inside a Liquid Glass production unit as well though.)

I once tried online dating.  This girl I was barely acquainted with insisted on a boudoir photograph of me as she had all this raw info but wanted to "see the goods".  I thought she was really interested in me so I complied.  A week later it was posted to some "revenge" subforum for everyone to dissect and laugh at, turns out I had spurned her in real life and she had sought me out obsessively to hurt me.

Does it really matter? There are other's that may be interested in dissecting the LAu, but
there are also people 'genuinely' interested in seeing the goods, surely.

That escalated quickly.

So a any cheap watch will do?

Well... not just any watch....

Where I am coming from is that given the care Alex puts into his gear I am going to assume a quality build.

Indeed.
Assuming with no  knowledge is risky, especially so in high end audio, the industry prays on the gullible.
Arming yourself with at least a basic understanding is good protection and some insurance towards a quality product.

I had one of these for a week.  The previous version and I can say it is quality build.

Someone need to pull Gavin down from his HEX+LAu+Abyss/LCD3/TH900/HD800 audio nirvana and post some more impressions.

Yeah....I know somewhat how he feels.....I've been listening to the Hex+LG+HD800/LCD-3/LCD-2/HE-6 and it's hard to pull away when you put in some NOS tubes like Syl. Bad Boys
(true ones from '52), RCA dark glass, Ken Rads etc......truly an amazing amp.  This is why I have high hopes/confidence in the LAu.

I think there's all this noise and controversy really because of the price.   At the price the LAu is being offered, it implies undeniably that it IS the best dynamic headphone amp ever made.....if it were in competition truly with other amps like the GS-X etc, it would be priced accordingly so.  It's sad that it's looking less and less likely I'll be able to make the weekend San Diego meet to listen to it.....I'm going to have to find some way to get away for a couple hours if possible.

People complained about build quality of LF.....seemed pretty well built to me with the unit I had.....and the Liquid Glass is just a tank....can't imagine the LAu being any worse.

If I have time before the San Diego meet, I can try to open our demo unit and take some pics. I assume that's OK with Alex.

Not sure exactly how to open it. It just looks like a bunch of allen screws.

This is utter rubbish. The price offered has NOTHING to do with quality in Hi-Fi circles. It is based on what the manufacturer/distributor chain/retailer thinks they can gouge out of the buyer.
It is perception, vaporware.

Implication is not reality.

The true test of high fidelity and design/build quality is determined by proper scrutiny of the internal construction, circuit analysis, performance tests, parts and material used etc.

Something can be wonderful looking on the outside, and be a total mess inside.

It can also be a total pig of an aesthetic design, but perform like a champion.

For the price the LAu is selling for, it had better be built internally as well as externally as good as the Headamp GSX Mk-II.

You can pay a huge price for a nameplate that has street cred (e.g. Harley Davidson) without the product being any better than the competing brands with a lesser branding.

As for the build quality I think many would ask if you popped the hood or if you're simply speaking of the chassis. It'd be prudent to
ask if you understand electronics, etc. Meaning, if you had opened or were to open it up would you be able identify key pluses and minuses of the
internals rather than just see a clean layout and think "oh, it's pretty."

I have no axe to grind against Alex or agenda to push. The LF flat out sucks. The LG is pretty polarizing. The LAu seems overpriced.
I'm neither a pirate nor a mobster, just an ordinary dude looking to sort the facts, who's into porn.
