Hmm, a closed headphone that sounds as good as the HD650 or DT880...

Two that might be are the Sony MDR-R10 and ATH-L3000, although I've never heard either.

As for detachable cables, any headphone cable can be made to detach. Just follow Tyll's example with the HD280.

Also, Sennheiser = The Dark Side

Go "open" and join the Light Side with Grado/Alessandro, DT880, and ATH-AD Series.

I'm looking forward to the day I get all passionate about a brand so I can go around screaming at people who use any other

I like people with a large dynamic range

My onboard soundcard (ASUS P5DGC-Deluxe) has background noise

, audible with my HD25. Is this common? Do only onboards have this? oh, and the background noise is affected by what I'm doing on the computer.

the reason I'm posting these questions here is I think they're too small and newbie'ish for any other place.

Not the closed headphone thing. Wasn't even a real question. I'll start a thread on that in the headphone forum after I've gotten my source.

For the background noise issue, head over to "Computers as Source" and read up, lots of good alternatives. EMU1212, EMU0404, M-Audio Firewire Audiophile, etc. Or even just get a micro-dac from headroom or an apogee minidac.

Then for amp, you'll want a SinglePower MPX3 or a Gilmore Reference if you prefer solid state to tubes.

For headphones, I'd suggest one each of : grado PS1, AT-L3000, headphile HP3000, headphile K3000, and Sony R10...

Women need to be replaced when they're high maintenance, tubes are high maintenance when they need to be replaced!

Women. Though I prefer the term "girls". "Women" is too serious, and serious females are a drag. Girls are young, fun and spunky.

Women are just boring and want to develop careers and play Scrabble.

Realize that you'll probably need another gajillion dollars for the source, amp, cables, power conditioner, couch, head support, insurance. You know what? Just go to a concert.

Also, guys, think ya gonna scare the females away with the tube thing.

Armies of hippies? Is that not an oxymoron?
Although I suppose the lines for tickets to a Grateful Dead concert could be mistaken for an army formation
