I usually just post some photos of review gear on forums and save discussion time for friends or put it all in my final review.

2DF2AFAD-E749-4F79-A713-BD7D26D8BCCF.jpeg

I rarely offer impressions as they can be distorted due to new toy syndrome (rare as so many review units come through Head pie like other active reviewers you get an immunity regardless of price), need burn in (gear or ears) etc etc, might be too soon - need to try the gear in different settings, tips, daps, music etc.

Peoples money is important.

Though ‘sound, price, impressions’ are what people ask immediately even before I have a proper chance to listen myself. So I usually dont do them and they can be inaccurate or different to the final review.
But generally these days they are congruent.

..unless I am really moved or impressed by the gear I dont give an early impression, when I am moved or impressed it is rare.

And when you do respond with impressions etc sometimes the word ‘shill’ pops up.

I even have it in my instagram tags as satire.

Or hype train gets thrown around. (and there have been a few of those.
Both good and baaaad).

Sometimes its hard to know how to respond.

Whatever you do someones going to unhappy or doubtful.

Which is why I usually hold off until the final review - except for a few photos to give people a less studio setting look at the gear.

Whatever the case the machine rolls on.

And gear has got better and better over the years I have been at Head fi. Much better.

And maybe we should just enjoy it.

Even though the niche portable hobby had grown into an entirely different beast in the last ten years or so.

Even though in the end it is a bit of a game and perhaps we should trust our fellow audiophiles.

Even though the ‘Catscades’ may or may not exist, the Solaris does and I have reviewed about all of the Campfire Audio line up and I really like them (Solaris) and find it hard to fault them so far.

Fit may not be for everyone, but thats a common thing for many earphones.

It is tough when you dont live near a store or headphone shows and cant try the gear out for yourself and am at the mercy of impressions and later reviews.

All one can do in that case is cross reference the impressions and later reviews then.

Of course the best is trying gear out for oneself but we dont all have that geographical luxury.

Enjoy the ride.

Regards
Expat

Best ever? Nah. I’m sure better exists. But I did love it while I owned that headphone. These Solaris can hang. That’s so impressive to me.

So, yes I would say Solaris can give multi-thousand dollar headphones a good run for their money. I am getting almost 95% of my desktop gear performance from my Solaris on a phone. I think I can live with that.

Ok guys you got me on a hype train!

Alright, I'll make sure to demo both. Btw, Fever Ray's leading vocal reminds me Björk a lot. Enjoyed it a lot ! Oh, and I shared an ambient-drone Spotify playlist earlier in the thread, I've a feeling you might like it

@davidmolliere Well, I've seen the Vega, Atlas and Andromeda on Son & Video website. Not sure about them demo'ing units though. Surprisingly, Vega is quoted at 1499€, while Atlas and Andro were both 1299€. That makes the Atlas the better deal here, price/perf wise. Won't make the purchase before Christmas period so fingers crossed S&V will get them by then. Y'all got me soooo hyped up by the Solaris, seems to be such a great all rounder, and a great value for the money.

Thank you mate, I'll check that playlist tonight, I have to work late and it will be a nice company I guess )

Btw, the 1499 euro for Vega is way too much. I got mine second hand for 700 euro. Which is a tremendous value, in my opinion.

Video for those interested:

  • HK price will be $12800.
  • Presenter said the Solaris reminded him of Ferrero Rocher chocolate (lol)
  • Large shell size was quite apparent to him as he has small ears so might be worth considering shorter sized tips.
  • He tried the Solaris with both the A&K SE100 and SP1000M and felt the sound gave him the feeling of listening to vinyl, with central sounding vocals.

For those who have heard both LX and Solaris, how much less bass/sub bass has the Solaris got? Is it like 50% of the LX? Is it still something you can feel?

I currently have the LX but would like to try the Solaris as well but it's the comments regarding it being bass lite that are putting me off but hearing that it has a vinyl like sound is a great positive. I'm not a bass head but do like a little weight to the low end to anchor the sound.

I'll be soon able to report on Oriolus BA300S tube amp with Solaris, as well as an upgraded Hansound Zen (8 wires)... we shall see but this will be a lot of fun no doubt!

I have never believed in physical burn in before, I am not sure what's happening, but the bass is hitting much harder today. I've left my IEMs on 24/7 for a few days now. Interesting. Maybe brain burn in or not, but the bass is now more satisfying.

I kinda can't keep quiet about this. There's no such thing as "brain burn in". At least, not in the sense that it would take days to adapt to a sound signature. The human brain isn't that slow. Adaptation to a new SQ will happen in a matter of minutes to hours, not days.
