Campfire Audio - Introducing 2 new models Hello Andromeda and Nova
Jul 31, 2022 at 4:48 AM Post #9,721 of 9,829
Hi
I would like to ask you for help. I have andromede og and wanted to change it to another IEM. I bought an ibasso dx320 which has an output impedance of 0.38 Ω. More bass came. I thought that maybe it would be worth buying a really good cable for it and getting the best out of the Andromeda and not buying another iem. At the moment, I have the ibasso cb 13 cable connected.
I was thinking about 64 u12t audio.
You can ask for some cable suggestions, if there is any point in updating them.
Regards

Is the Andromeda 2020 still highly relevant in Fall 2022?

I ask in terms of both performance and price. Is it still near top of heap for performance, as well as price/performance ratio? I see it’s still selling at or near its original price of $1,100-

If one is looking for similar wide spacing and quality, as well as size, is there anything else more current?

Thanks.

I think it’s still solid, but less of a value pick today.

IER-M9 is also very competitive if not superior to be honest. Has a bit more richness to it, and larger stage but less sharpness in transients.

I think that Andromeda will always be relevant in one way or another. Not necessairly one's top pick, but something to consider still :)

I have original series Andromedas from before they even stated cerakoting them. I’d say they’re still relevant. I consider them my bottom line reference set.

My thoughts exactly. As far as relevance goes, I like to think that Andromedas for IEMs are what Senns HD 600 are for full-sized cans :)

Yes, I know that Senns worked for their legend for decades, but that's just my two subjective cents :)

I've had mine for more than a couple of years. I think there can be several answers to your questions. For price-to-performance considerations, you'd be hard pressed to find many IEMs that are better bang for your buck than the Andro 2020. That's not to say there aren't good options out there. I've not heard them myself, but I've heard good things about the ThieAudio Monarch series, the Symphonium Helios, and the FAudio Dark Sky. I have heard the Dunu Zen Pro and they represent a better price-to-performance ratio for my tastes, but the Zen Pro have a different sound to the Andro 2020.

If you want something with a similarly dark tuning (meaning a downward sloping one from bass to treble) then I'm not sure there's much else out there. One possibility might be the Campfire Audio Supermoon, if it ever gets released as a universal pair of IEMs. Take a look in @Rockwell75's Watercooler thread, I'm pretty sure I read a post or two of his saying the Supermoon amounts to a good upgrade to the Andro 2020.

If balanced detailed BA timbre is your jam it’s right up there in it’s bracket.

Should always audition and they benefit from a good DAP

Supermoon is by no means a dark IEM-- but I very much consider it the long awaited spiritual successor to the Andromeda in that it it's a very engaging & musical yet highly technical sound. Supermoon would get my vote for most well rounded and widely appealing IEM on the market right now. Fans of the Andromeda, CFA or planar drivers in general are highly advised to seek out a demo of the Supermoon-- there's nothing out there quite like it at the moment.

I’m waiting to see if Campfire releases a universal version of this.

I'd look for some Effect Audio pure copper cable. Or some used reference 8 alo audio cable, you can find them out for a really good price

Silver seems to be a nice conductor material to make sound a bit leaner and controlling, so personally I would take a look into that. Hope this helps, thanks!

The alo audio silver cable does add a nice level of detail and I enjoy it over the stock cable

Yes, silver is known for boosting details, which I find particularly useful for cans such as i.e. pre-fazor LCD-2 :)

Andromeda 2020 is still arguably my #1 rec at about $1K for someone just getting into this hobby. I've kind of moved beyond it but it's still one of the best IEMs for attaining a balance of fun and technicalities.
