I plan on downloading CD's to my computer, but I realized I have no idea whether the built in CD drive on my Mac is suitable. If I am just ripping CD's does a better CD player make a difference, or does a better drive only help when playing music off CD's?

Your CD drive should be fine for ripping CDs. Just be sure to rip without compression, etc.

If u are passing out digital audio (optical/coax/hdmi) from your PC to a receiver/DAC then it matters not what type of optical drive/player u have

No, there's no reason to feed an external player in and capture the stream, it will just make your life harder. Use the internal drive and whatever ripper you like.
