In the latest Brainwavz email newsletter they've announced a couple of upcoming over-ear headphones that look interesting:

HM100: Take our popular HM5 headphones, refine the sound signature and design further and you have our HM100. The embossed headband and tan coloring match perfectly to the polished, real wood earcups - simply stunning. A modern headphone with a hint of retro styling.
  • Name: HM100
  • Retail Price: $250
  • Release Date: September
ALARA: Our latest flagship model for the high end market using custom developed Planar Magnetic drivers for high fidelity audio reproduction and made with machined CNC parts.
  • Name: Alara
  • Retail Price: $600
  • Release Date: October

Should be interesting to see what they did with the HM100 as modding the HM5 seems to be pretty popular so lots of data out there on things people would like to see in the HM100. At that price point, they will have some serious competition with the Senn HD6xx, Beyer DT880/250, and AKG 553/612. Also be interesting to compare the Alara with the Aeon, Cascade, and Fostex at that price point. Looks like Brainwavz is making a big push toward the mid-market.

That same style cup attachment is used on several of the chi-fi brands like Superlux HD660/330/440 series and I am not a big fan of it. I'd like to see a better attachment method at that price point.

No, the plastic connector at the end of the metal. Black plastic with a single screw through the connector that allows the connector to wobble. Even on genuine Beyers, I have had to locktite the screws more often than not as they tend to work loose.

Hmm... I checked My dt880 and takstar pro80. No wobble. Very similar design. Maybe there's just something wrong with superlux?

I’ve used the HD660 in mods before, and have woodied a couple of pairs...the Superlux version of the headband is a little smaller than the Beyer, and not as well made. It’s functional though, and if you’re not asking for Beyer quality, it serves its purpose well.
