Hi Folks,

I am finding horrible audio distortion on tracks that I have imported through iTunes onto my iPad 2.  The bitrate of the files that I am experience this range from 128 to Apple Lossless.

It's not just the B&W's either...tried a pair of PFE's I had lying around as well, and discovered the same issue.

However, when I enable soundcheck on the iPad...the problem goes away.

I wish there was a preamp setting that I could access, a la iTunes.  I suspect this may be the issue?

Thoughts?

Well, after troubleshooting a bit, here's what I've found:

I ran a couple of the files through mp3gain, and found out that they were clipping.  After they were de-clipped, and reimported, the distortion was gone.

But...and here's what's bizarre to me...when I use the EQ presets, even tracks that I have not de-clipped automatically lose the distortion.  Based on my experience with mp3gain and my ipod classic, shouldn't the effect be the other way around? EQ applied to brickwalled tracks = lots more distortion?
