I've seen it done before, and I wanted to try it out myself. The fabric recommended for this mod is blue-tack or plasticine. I bought blue-tack (Tack-It)

1. Removed the pads, which sits nicely around the cup. Makes me wonder why Ultrasone didn't apply this feature instead of that stupid lock-mechanism which doesn't work.

2. Unscrew the drivers from the actual cup; very easily done. Three screws on each driver/cup.

3. Now, time to layer out the blue-tack. It is very elastic and easy to work with - still it's more stiff than plasticine.

4. I covered as much as I could, even the inside of the little rubber-ring in the middle.

5. After coated as much as I could, I made landscapic wholes and bumps in the blue-tack. This is supposed to absorve sound-waves, and thereby reducing delay & decay in the music. To achieve these shapes, I used two pencils. Just pressing them down there. Anything can be used, it's just a matter of what you want.

6. I also layered a cout inside of the driver-housing.

7. The mod is complete, and I had to screw everything to place. The headpone gained around 100-150 grams, but it's not noticeable when wearing them.

THE RESULT:
There was some difference, but not much. I would say that the bass had tightened abit up, but also lost some of its depth. It wasn't as boomy anymore, and everything sounded more clinical and precise. Tbh I wasn't very pleased with the mod. It got rid of boomyness, but also the depth which made the phones warm and cosy. I wouldn't suggest the mod to anyone, cuz the sound doens't improve enough to sacrifise the deep bass-area..

Wow, many thanks for the pictorial and your impressions. I was considering doing this myself, but now I'm thinking I'll spend my time elsewhere.

My deepest respect alexpea, as it is psychologically very difficult to avoid the usual "yeah really good stuff now" reflex after spending work or money on something.

I personally got trapped in this "brand new toy" trap several times, to be honest.

I don't see why you would ever need that much blu-tack. The whole point is to dampen resonances right? Three or four small blobs strategically placed should do that. Still, it is always good to experiment. Did you try a smaller amount first?

Excellent step-by-step shots! I used about 1/4 oz of the goop on each side (one 1/2 oz stick of the pictured Scotch Adhesive Putty) of mines. It made a slight difference on the bass but I think the removal of the extra foam made a bigger difference overall.

Of all the mods I did, I think the blue tak had the least effect on the sound. But what the hell, I'm too lazy to unscrew the whole thing and take it out. At least next time if I need any blu-tak I know where to look.
