Biggest Disappointment Headphone

Pretty condescending comment. It's very difficult for some people to be able to sample an expensive headphone, which is WHY they come to places like Head-Fi to find reviews and opinions about them. It's not like you can just waltz into your local Best Buy and get to demo a Utopia or He 1000 v2. In fact, if it was that easy, sites like Head-Fi would probably not exist.

Why on earth would anyone want to shop for headphones or any hifi at Best Buy? I suppose they could clerk an earbud but otherwise I'm not they even know what a headphone is.

So here is the issue as I see it. Many of you just want to point and click on the Amazon site and it's because you want to be return it if you don't like it. I get that part but ....do you know that most of the better manufacturers are either not interested in being on Amazon or are trying get off of Amazon which requires lots of money and attorneys.

Oh I wanted to interject that I read his post and didn't read anything condescending in it. Maybe you've read something into the post that isn't really its intended meaning.

I'm probably in the minority when it comes to this (or not, I seem to not be the only one), but as much as I enjoyed listening to classical and other "bass light" genres, the HD650 seemed to be a little off to my ears. I never could pin point it, ended up selling them on.

They were pretty in their design, though.

Just out of curiosity what does it matter what the rest of us think? It's your impression, your ears and your opinion ....they are all that matters

as I am reading through this thread, I am more and more wondering how many of these posts were probably made by people who never heard these headphones driven by a "good synergy amplifier and DAC" and with various music styles while calling them so easily "their biggest disappointment".

Also, if you order an expensive headphone only based on reviews and then don't like it ... uuh ... how shall I put this in words ... uuh ... maybe think twice next time :)[/QUOTE]
For me reading reviews and all info on a set of cans, is my only way of getting a feel for what I can hopefully assume their sound profile is. As I live in a very rural section of the US and physically disabled, there are no other options left for me.
So I really don't know what you mean by "maybe think twice next time". If Iike them great, if not I will sell them later on. I have 6 pairs and 1 pair on the way. Out of the 6, I plan on keeping only 2 pair. The others I will sell at a loss, in the near future. That is the price I have to pay to play, no big deal !

I've been so happy with my HE-500. I'm driving them off a Polaris and I think I like them so much because vocals are where headphones give me the shivers.

I've been looking for something to move up and had really gotten excited about the Elear, so I'm disappointed to see how many people are down on them. I was mostly interested because they sound like they're so different from the HE-500. Hearing them compared to HD650 is bizarre because like a lot of folks, the HD650 just aren't engaging enough for me (I have the old black version).

I've also thought about the MrSpeakers Aeon, but from what I hear, they can lack engagement as well, though the vocal presence is supposed to be dead on.

The HE-500 is a rock solid headphone, with really incredible mid-range. It's actually great everywhere, bass, mids, treble. I think you would be disappointed with the Elear given it is 2x the price and does not sound nearly as good IMO. Worse sound stage too.

Maybe you can try a pair though and see what you think.

That's my point!!!

Yup I figured that and so I backed your play. I think most retail stores and online stores only care about you to the point when you pay. After that no service and no support. I think consumers should be able to walk in to a store, listen to a wide spectrum of choices and only speak to a representative when you're ready. No pushing, no pitching, no nonsense. Salespeople aren't the answer, your ears are the answer.

The 500's are top notch bro. There's times when I'm listening to my 560's, and wish that midrange was there during vocals. They're an extremely engaging headphone.
I even went back to an emotiva amp (BasX100) because it did wonders for my 500's. The only difference between the 560's and 500's now are the 560's, are a little more expansive in Soundstage, and a little more balanced in the presentation. My goal was to morph an HD800, with the 500's. I think I'm as close as I can get. Lol

I think I understand what you are saying. I have several pairs of HP's that I bought new and ended up not caring for and did not return. It takes me more than a couple of weeks to really get a feel for them. Returning items is almost as difficult for me as trying items out. So I will just sell HP'S as used at some point. Again unless you live on one of the coast areas or large midwest cities, it is really hard to try out headphones as you state.
So my question is, do you offer to sell headphones to members here with option to return item in said amount of time until member finds a phone he wants to own ? Member of coarse would pay shipping !
