Day 2 and the T50P are stil shocking me, - every singer sounds like they have a cold, and everything sounds like it was recorded using Tin cans and String.
PX200s are much much better at reproducing what an instrument actually sounds like.
 
I don't believe in burn in
 
is it the crappy thin cable?
 
anyone had them recabled?

It sounds like you are not finding the right placement at all! Please make sure they SEAL completely to the ear. Try pressing them to your ears and move them around so the leather pads close themselves to your ears - if possible for you! Then they will sound like they are supposed to. But if they do not seal to the ears they sound like what you describe.

Well I couldn't resist. Had a "free" $200 gift certificate to Brookstone, so I bought a pair of T50ps for <$100 out of pocket. Got them yesterday, have to say I really like the sound so far, also very comfortable, nice and light.

Needed update, after about 150hrs of burn-in they now sound incredible, everything I want from a portable,
 
So I now believe in burn-in, I take it all back. 
I used a mix of normal music and pink-noise (overnight) from Stereophile Test Disc 2
 
My ES7s just aren't anywhere near as good, and I love those.

I purchased my pair of Beyerdynamic T-50p's around the Christmas period, these are one of the newer models that come with the improved earpads that are also present on the DT 1350's. I'm incredibly happy with my purchase so far, I'm still in the process of burning them in, but already I find them more detailed than my Sennheiser HD 598's.

#23046 just purchased from Amazon Warehouse for a very good price....they look very good but I have no idea how old they might be to determine what,if any, burn in might be needed.....any advice as to what recent serial nos might be would be appreciate.....
 
they sound pretty good right out of the box....

[size=medium]Bought these at a very good price second user and they’d just been recabled by Custom Cans (who are in the UK-as am I) with a silver plated OFC cable. Also has the after model number 25,000 pads. I read that these ‘revised’ pads are softer and seal better and are the same as those on the DT1350's. Many people reported issues with getting a good seal on the old pads, with the newer ones I'm told this is not such an issue.[/size]

I’d just tried the T5p on appro and found them too bassy (my ears seem to fit perfectly into the cups) I suppose I need to try a T1, but really prefer more portable kit, which the T5p isn’t IMHO.[/size]
 
[size=medium]I’m surprised. Whilst a little lacking in performance originally (and, yes, I was disappointed) I’ve now burnt in the new cable for 120 odd hours. This added to the total burn/usage time. [/size]
[size=medium]Also read that, despite their low impedance, these had been described as hard to drive because of their low sensitivity (are they at 107?-thought <100 was low sensitivity?) so need amping to reveal their complete potential. So have experimented with Amps to see if I can find a ‘sweet’ match.[/size]
 
[size=medium]I’ve paired it with the TTVJ Slim. My Pico Slim (which I love big time with my IEM’s) seemed a bit overwhelmed. [/size]
[size=medium]Also I thought the T50p was light for me on the treble so a little boost at 4K on the EQ also saw an improvement.[/size]
 
[size=medium]I’m liking the ‘new’ sound a lot-quite sparky and not too bassy. Truly portable too. I wonder why Beyerdynamic are such ‘Marmite’ to the ears?[/size]

Maybe I was expecting too much from it as I myself was a potential T50p buyer upon it's announcement. Lots of factors might contribute in my conclusion including environment setting at which I demoed it or the phones might be fresh out of the box which needs breaking in or it could be the phone itself.
