Beyerdynamic T1 3rd Gen out now
Jul 14, 2022 at 9:22 AM Post #1,441 of 1,824
A bit different than my experience directly comparing the T5.3 and the T1.3. I found the T1.3 to have a bit more slam and better dynamics. I haven't really spent any time with the previous gen T5's so maybe this is just a T5 trait in general; but I found the T5.3 a bit restrained sounding personally something I don't recall experiencing with other closed-back Beyers I'm familiar with, maybe it's the steeply angled drivers in the enclosure causing that. But the king of bass slam of the Beyers I tried would have be the DT 1770 Pro.
I am curious, when you cite your conparisons like this (and the other thread too):

Do you currently have both headphones to direct A/B now, or are you basing on memory? How long have you/ did you owned your T5.3? Could you expand on your 'experience' directly comparing them?

I'm always struck by a fresh listen myself, A/Bing back and forth between T5.3 and T1.3 as I type and there's no way I'd give slam label to T1.3...

It's always surprising how subjective headphones and audio can be, even among those who arrive at the same conclusion (I do really like the T1.3)... it can be useful to clarify what we mean by terms like 'slam' since they can mean different things to different readers.

For me, bass slam generally refers mainly to the slope of the bass shelf in the tuning. A rapid rise tends to translate to a more sudden bass hit. Everything will be nice and neutral in the mids and then WHAM a bass hit kicks and jolts the listener ever so lightly - that's slam for me.

Both the DT770 (80 ohm) and T5.3 exhibit quite a fun shelf in this respect:

In contrast, although the bass level itself is very comparable, the T1.3 is more of a huge oncoming tsunami.

You see the enormous wave coming, looming over the horizon everywhere, 'holy jeebus, did you see what that thing just did to the mids!' lol :)

It's an epic listen, but it's not slamming in the sense that you feel that bass warmth ubiquitously rather than suddenly.

One thing is for sure, it has been great to have an excuse to take out my old 770 80 ohms to have a listen to... they used to be my go to office headphone for a few years when I was still going in, but they don't get enough head time these days with the 1770 and shiny new 700 pro X sitting next to them. They really are an incredible performer for their price.

Can you post a graph of all 3 together possibly please? (T1.3, T5.3 & 770 (80))
Sorry, while I do deeply appreciate Crinacle's work and am sure to keep all watermarks and credit accordingly, I am a freeloader and do not have access to his premium tier.

Here is a link to T1.3 and T1.5 compared directly:

https://crinacle.com/graphs/headphones/graphtool/?share=T1_(3rd_Gen),T5_(3rd_Gen)

Don't fixate too much on the raw bass level, Crin's normalization doesn't quite show the T1.3 right to my ear in this respect. But for slam, it's that boost/shelf around 100Hz that tracks to my ear.

I didn't own them, I borrowed them from a good friend of mine. I spent about a week and a half with them at about 5+ hours a day. It is memory now which does influence it some, also it could be system variances and personal perception and what I think is slam may vary. If we're talking about the sub-bass coming out of nowhere suddenly, etc. then yes the T5.3 does that more. When I was referring to the slam I was talking more about the impact and power of the sub-bass when it hits. I will give them another listen as soon as I'm able to, but I'm hoping to borrow my friends Z1R next. Don't get me wrong, I do like the T5.3 quite a bit.

Doing some research.
I turned down the volume a bit. Now it sounds perfect. The T1 needs less power than my Grados.
So forget my earlier statement
T1 and tr-amp= good combo

6.3 better than 3.5?

6.3 better than 3.5?
Never tested the 3.5mm output.
All my cans have a big fat jack.
But I have read that some user says the 6.3mm sounds best.

I’m not able to trace the slightest difference between the two plugs on my TR-amp.

Owned my G3 a few days.

People say they can be powered by portable sources like a phone or tablet…
Tested with different sources.
Atrox/E30 , tr-amp, ipad, apple dongle.
I am not sure…

Think they miss something in the low end with low output gear.
But with some music types and a little lower volume, the ipad is a very nice solution.
The dongle sounds lower, possible to max vol. Not possible to max vol with the ipad 3.5 output.(ipad 5)
So my conclusion is that these need a little extra power to bring life to the lower register…

Anyone here who listen to drums and heavy metal?
What is your experience with amps and sources?
How much power do you feed them with before they comes to life?
I want something more portable that drives them well.
Something between an apple dongle and a tr-amp!
What to buy?
An impacto?
Also want shorter cable…
