Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO - Beyer's open-back mastering headphone

Umm...so...

I'm looking into getting my first pair of serious headphones. I've narrowed down my choices between the 1990 pro and Focal Elex. They seem to have roughly the same sound signature. What I like about the Focal Elex from Massdrop is it includes XLR cables. 1990 pro doesn't seem to be compatible with XLR cables unless some serious mod work is performed. Has anyone compared these two? I'm hoping to use these headphones with the upcoming Monolith by Monoprice Desktop amp/dac.

I had the same issue, really liked the look of the 1990, but have a balanced amp. So I bought a pair of Beyerdynamic Amiron, which can be used with xlr cables. I am not telling you to buy the Amiron vs 1990, however if you have a chance to compare the two that would be a good option. From my understanding the amiron is a little warmer, but I have not had the pleasure to hear the 1990. There is a thread here that does compare the two. Good luck with your search !

I appreciate the input! In that case I may just order both from amazon and return the one I like the least. I think the only way I'll ever be able to decide on a headphone is to actually listen to them in person.

How many DT 1990 owners are amping with a tube amp? I run mine through a modified Darkvoice 336SE (fitz mod and preamp bypass) with some vintage tubes... anybody else?

I use a Feliks Elise tube amp with my 1990's, it's a beautiful pairing, the Elise has a classic tube sound without ever sounding too gooey or taming the 1990's too much, love it!. This is my currant set up with CV1052 tubes, via an adapter, this gives me the best sound I've ever heard. 20181028_161933.jpg

I personally think the Hugo looks nice in the silver finish. its good to contrast a little, too many black devices/equipment looks boring after a while.

Does hybrid count? I use mine with a lightly modded Bottlehead Quickie+Quicksand combo. I think it sounds great. I've been lusting after the SEX, too.

What's your opinion of the 6080? I run a vintage 6080 in my Darkvoice and like it so far, it wasn't a huge improvement in sound over the stock Chinese big bottle (I got pretty luck with my stock tubes, no hum good sound), but the 6080 runs so much cooler than the stock one. Have you run different brands of the 6080? Any standouts?

Wow, that looks amazing, I bet the sound is crazy!
