Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO - Beyer's open-back mastering headphone

Where's the black foam? You talking about the foam covering the driver?

Thats right! I really like how they sound w/o this foam

The DT 1990 is really good for EDM and trip/hip-hop, so far better than the DT 1770

Oh thats... uhm... sucks, because I bought 1770 only 2 month ago and do i need to buy 1990 now? :) ok, now i'm in search of one for test listening.

I am finding the DT 1990 is still burning in though, been one of the more interesting cases of burn-in I've experienced, so I'm holding off on any definite conclusions before then.

I felt the same with my 1770 as its sound changed a bit all the time in period of 5-10 days of IsoTek system enhancer. Bass was bloomy, very wide. Now it is controlled and tight. Highs were really harsh w/o black foam and i tested it on 10-12 tracks with most sharp highs. After burn-in i could enjoy most of them on high volume. And its not brain burn-in because i listened to HPs only to test a little bit for 5-10min in a day. Willpower :)

Not that it would solve the problem completely, but amp pairings do help with the TH-900.  I'm not quite sure I could handle more bass than the TH-900 currently has....after the highs have been dealt with (amp pairing, "burn-in", Lawton, etc.) you do have arguably the best bass headphone out there.

I think that amp pairings helps. I wait for my Jodie to be delivered :) I feel like my dt-1770 will be pleased to be powered by this schiit :)

Guyz, can someone test 1990 with leatherette pads? I think it could be interesting!

I'd rather they just discount the DT-1990 to $440, which is what I paid for my DT-1770

Same here, the DT-1770 is big bang for $440. I would consider a 1990 for same coin.

Ah I see, my DT 1770 was used so it didn't need any burning in. I am curious about that amp. I'm personally really happy with the DT 1990 powered off my Project Sunrise III with JJ gold pin ECC88 tubes(very clean and dynamic sounding tubes, the DT 1990 love them). They sound pretty good on my Sony UDA-1(the HD 600 loved this amp though) but some reason the headphones pick up noise on it so it's regulated to DAC duty, just like the DT 1770 but none of the other headphones I used on it have including the Nighthawks which are usually slighly more sensitive to amp noise. I plan on trying out both leatherette and velour DT 1770 pads on the DT 1990 here soon, curious what they will do to the sound.

It isn't at HD800 level and neither is its price

As I guess you're the reviewer of the DT1990 for headphonia, then I've got a quick question.

At the moment I use the DT1770 pretty much for EDM stuff, and it covers those genres very well IMO. I also have a DT880Pro which I use for classical, jazz and acoustic (as well as mixing), mainly used through a Chord Mojo.

So, is the DT1990 a significant step up over the DT880? Personally I think the DT880 is an absolute bargain for the price, and despite it's age it's still a very detailed HP and works well for non electronic genres.

I'm not a fan of the DT880 and T1 myself. I don't see the DT1990PRO with B-Pads as a step up from the 880, therefore the signature to me is too different, it's more of a sidestep. With the A-pads I prefer it over the DT880 actually.
For EDM stuff, I'd stick to the DT1770 as it has bigger bass compared to the 1990. A lot depends on the amp you'll be using it with though (339 OTL tube  + DTXXXXPro = big bass).

And yes, "Lieven" that's me.

There are different versions of the pads already too, which may change impressions a bit. I find my DT 1990 with balanced pads to have a bigger bass than my DT 1770. My DT 1770 is part of the problematic first batch of the DT 1770's though.
