Beyer DT770 Pro/ 80 Detachable cable MOD
Jul 11, 2015 at 10:38 PM Post #226 of 315
Hey guys! I just picked up some DT770 pro 250's for $75, they have a broken cable, it doesn't have a connector on the end to put into an amp or anything. So i thought it was perect for this mod! How easy would this be for a beginner, with a little soldering experience? and does anyone have a good link to the 3.5mm port?
Thanks!

congrats on good purchase :) There is not much soldering going on with this mod, so you will be good. IMO the most difficult part is actually making hole larger to accomodate the socket. As for links to example sockets you can use, just read this thread from beginning.

Mogami 2893 or 2534 is popular for recables.  Great stuff.

Alright, so im just about to order the cable and jack, and im looking at this jack: http://www.amazon.com/3-5mm-Stereo-Panel-Mount-Jack/dp/B000ML4A2Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437346472&sr=8-1&keywords=3.5mm+jack&pebp=1437346508971&perid=02AAM0NZPR6JMYBTY1GJ
Do i just desolder the wires from the original cable/jack and resolder them to the new jack?

Hey, ignore my PM.

I would recommend replacing all the wires. Solder the wires for the right speaker straight to the 3.5mm chassis connector and the left to it separately, so you would have 2 wires ONLY coming off the left driver, the center tab on the drivers is not even necessary to use. Just use the stock wires for the right speaker.

thanks! so the only soldering i need to do is unsolder the original wires, and connect the right speaker to the right input on the jack, and vice versa for the left? and with the mogami 2893, i would just use a couple lengths of the red wire in it?

This is how mine are wired. You DON'T need to use 4 wires for the right speaker, or need to replace them at all, I did it for looks. Just imagine that the braided wires are the stock wires in your DT770 (this is a DT990).

Both channels' grounds are connected straight to the 3.5mm female connector, and the positives are connected to their proper signal.

Cool.  What does all that extra felt in there do for the sound?  I never tried modifying a 990.

Actually that is stock, I haven't changed the sound of them, just the functionality and appearance.

For some reason the felt configuration seems to resemble DT880?

It's the same! The only differences between the 990 and 880 are that the thin metal mesh the you see on that 880 driver is not there on the 990, and the 990 is a tiny bit more open-back. That's why I laugh when I see that someone owns them both, they are about 2% different in sound.
