Alright guys, so my buddy got the beats pro and I'm sick of everyone at school getting them and talking about how amazing they are when I know it's all marketing. I want a pair of headphones under $250 that when they hear them they'll instanntly know that they're better than the beats. I also want them to be portable so I can use them with my ipod and such. (Sony XB headphones are tooooo big.) I like the look of the M50s.

The 3 contenders for you would be

Sennheiser HD25-II
Ultrasone 580
Audio Technica M50

and if you can buy a cheap Fiio E11 portable amplifier to use,

Beyer Dynamic DT770 Pro 80ohm

My pick would be the Beyer DT770 followed by the Ultrasone 580.

All good headphones to top the Beats, just personal preference of mine.

Not to bug you or anything but this is the third thread i have seen started by you asking pretty much the same thing.

Personally i still recommend the sennheiser hd 25 1 ii highly. The chance you will be unsatisfied is unlikely. Especially considering they cost $180.

Are they better than the m50s or the 580s?

Shure 750DJ is a very bass dedicated can like the Beats ~ it's the better can but unlike the M50,
Senn HD 25-II, and Ultrasone 580/Beyer DT 770 Pro - it will not lend itself to any music outside
of beat heavy club based dance chart music.

The 3 above and the Beyer will cover a wide range of music more successfully, not just bass
heavy Top #40.

If you want the highest quality bass then the Beyer DT770 Pro wins the day but it will need a Fiio E6 or E11 to drive them.

2nd best bass quality goes to the Ultrasone 580, in 3rd the Shure 750DJ (good quantity but we're talking quality bass here too)
and 4th is a tie between the HD-25-II and M50.

I can assure you the bass quality on the hd 25 1 ii is far superior to the shure srh750dj.

IMO the Hd 25 will be a entry into this hobby, however, if your primary aim is to wow your friends the 580s are the way to go for the NEEDZ MOAR BASS CROWD.

P.S. Welcome to Head-fi, Sorry about your wallet. (why hasn't anybody said this yet?)

Yeah I'm debating between those two. The 580s are $60 cheaper.

I'm saving that line for when the OP comes back with a new thread :-

'I would like to hear the New York Symphony Orchestra on either side of my head - any suggestions?'
