Best sub £250 pair of headphones (over ear)

Aight, I'll almost definitely end up buying an amp in a few weeks, so does that make any difference to a clear winner between these headphones?

Not a clear winner as it depends on your taste, but the DT880 is the most neutral, it is very detailed and revealing and plays well with most music. It's also very comfortable.

Aight I'll keep that in mind, thanks a lot for the help dude, much appreciated

If anyone else has any opinions on the HE400s or other input on a choice between the four choices listed before that would be ideal, gonna hold out for some more opinions before pulling the trigger on anything yet

Do you have experience with the neo? And also you mentioned the hifiman he400s, i'm thinking of getting an amp and those at the minute, does adding an amp make a difference to those? And how would that compare to beyer dt880 with the same amp?

The Neo is fairly new and I have not heard it. I do own the HE400S, however. An amp like the Fulla 2 would probably augment the low end on the 400S and also possibly improve macrodynamics, IMO. Possibly a bit more detail revealed, maybe. The DT880 needs an amp, while the 400S improves with one but does not necessarily require one.

So between the two (HE400S + amp / DT800 + Amp), which do you think would be the best combination in terms of sound quality?

And side note: would it be beneficial to get a dac/amp combo or just an amp?

Sound quality would likely be fairly equivalent overall, but I would give the slight edge to the HE400S, personally. I like the planar sound, myself. That said, the HE400S is more versatile and flexible, as it can be played without an amp and sounds quite good doing so. You cannot do that with the DT880.

I'd go with the HE400S - slightly smoother response curve.

DAC-HPamp will have the decoding done by the DAC chip in there and its output stage will handle the analogue signal, which is likely cleaner vs what you can get straight out of a mainstream device. Not to mention the signal going into the amp stage will be fixed voltage.

I do like the HE-400S and I think much better with a amp but not bad without one. I would definitely pick them over the Meze 99 C's but if you want Closed for the price not too bad. The HD-650's with a Bottlehead Crack is a awesome setup too. The DT-880's are also very good with the Crack.
