Hmm, tempted to pick up the LG DAC to go head to head against the DFR.

I have both and it will be a fun test. Sound quality wise, I have zero complaints about the HiFi module. But I am growing tired of it having a mind of its own and deciding when I can and cannot use all of its power that it has to offer. Tricking it into higher impedance or auxiliary mode makes me reach for the DFR more often.

Here's a very detailed review of the Ulefone Vienna:

The part we're all mostly interested in is halfway through the second video.

Actually this is one of the best smartphone reviews I've seen, definitely worth a watch.

That sounds ominous, considering I don't have the G5 :frowning2:

All the V10 praise here is really making me want to have that phone. I know I already asked this before, but It's still not clear for me how the V10 sound compares to the Axon 7.

It's because is an all new phone with better aspects, and ZTE's putting a big emphasis on the sound of that phone. Haven't seen no reviews though.

There are quite a few reviews in Chinese of the Axon 7 that discuss its audio capabilities. There's a thread with a translation of them on the ZTE USA community forum. The general consensus is the Axon 7 performs very well on the audio front and is a step up from the previous generation of Axon phones. The only negative review I read is where they compared it directly to the Vivo Xplay 5 and found the latter was superior in every way.

Dr Dre beats sound on HTC phones is a gimmick. It is basically a glorified proprietary EQ preset.

If you want an audiophile phone go with iPhone 5 or the Samsung Galaxy line (3, 4 or note 2). All of the above have USB line out. This way you can use a portable external DAC/amp.

Beats it's just stupid (I'm an HTC 10 owner) and the above poster is right. It's a fancy pantsy EQ like effect.

I've owned the s3, s4, LG G3, LG v10 and now I own the HTC 10. I will say that the HTC 10 is my favorite of them all. LG v10 might have been bust the battery was dead so quickly and the thing was hard to operate with one hand (which was my main reason for going to the HTC 10. Phone is fast reliable includes micro SD and gives you the ability to use streaming services including TIDAL. Spotify doesn't sound bad either, but I use my phone for music Discovery a lot so having the Android operating system comes in handy. I will send htc10 is by far my favorite of all of my hardware.
RIP sansa clip+

Go with the HTC you won't be disappointed

If I could afford a new phone I'd get the HTC 10. I had the m8 and sold it when I was short of cash, later on I got an m9 and just gave it to my girlfriend as an anniversary present to replace her iPhone 5 16gb that's had its storage maxed out for a while now. Now I'm using a very best up moto x 2014 that isn't anything special for audio quality.

I currently have the HTC One M8. Audio is okay but noticeably lacks compared to my MBP. Can't put my finger on it. BoomSound EQ is a half-fix.

Looking to upgrade. Been hearing a lot great things about the audio in the HTC 10 but few comparisons to older devices. How much better is the 10 v the M8 for audio? If at all? Should I consider a different phone?

Primarily will be using Sennheiser CX2.00 but also AUX in car.

Don't forget the ZTE Axon 7. If anyone owns it I would be very interested in a review. Is there a thread about it on head-fi? I couldn't find one.

Sorry, not much clear for me. Are you saying that the Xplay 5 Elite sounds much better than the Axon 7 in every way?

The Xplay 5 Elite has 2*ES9028+OPA1612 according to GSM Arena.

The Axon 7 has AKM 4961 + 4490

Do we know which one is better?

EDIT: Found this on GSM Arena:

...From an objective point of view, the Xpaly5 Elite model stacks the best audio DACs & op-amps in business while using the most expensive audio setup ever conceived for a smart phone. Period.

HiFi 3.0 implementation in Xplay5 Elite ensures a PAIR (not one) of high-end stereo ESS SABRE ES9028 DACs followed by a PAIR (not one) of Texas Instruments OPA1612 dual op-amps is differential configuration. Each ES9028 being a stereo DAC and able to handle two audio channels are forced to act a mono DAC handling only one channel in HiFi 3.0 architecture for even better performance. Result is 3dB increase in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) from 129dB to a magnanimous 132dB in a smart phone!!! Then the OPA1612's that falls next in the audio chain are again used in expensive differential configuration. These are acting as I/V converters i.e. converting the current output of DACs to voltage to drive our headphones. This is serious stuff applicable to 5% of the smart phone buyers who uses expensive audiophile grade headphones to listen to music. Finally another OPA1612 in single-ended configuration completes the chain by acting as a sole headphone amplifier. Promising to say the least, coz in paper at least it beats my Vivo X5Max"s HiFi 2.0 architecture fair and square.

I haven't heard the Axon 7 yet. The review I read compared it to the XPlay 5 and said the XPlay 5 was superior in bass, mids, treble, soundstage etc to the Axon 7. I'm not surprised as the XPlay 5 is definitely the best smart phone I have listened to. I did a review which you should be able to find with the search facility.

I should point out that's only one review that compared the Axon 7 and Xplay 5. Perhaps the XPlay 5's sound signature was more to the author's taste.
